Your Mind Invented 'Substance'

By Leo Gura - July 5, 2026

Another fragment from the book I am writing:

Your mind is constructing the notion of ‘substance’ in order to construct your sanity and sense of self. When you were born (so to speak), you invented the idea that objects are made out of substances. This is not a scientifically proven idea, but the ego doesn’t care. It is a very deep construction of the ego-mind in order for it to feel like a real human being. You don’t understand this yet, but in order to be human you had to assign a substance to yourself. In your mind, being human is a kind of ‘substance’ you think you are or have. You invented the idea that you are a physical object made of smaller physical objects. For that to work you had to invent the idea of physical objects. “But Leo! Look at this chair, that is a physical object!” No, a chair is not a physical object. You invented that. A chair is a non-physical figment of Consciousness. This is very different from a physical object. Or, if you are more religiously-inclined then you invented the substance called a ‘soul’ and you gave yourself a soul. This soul is as invented as a physical object. What is a soul made of anyway? The ego-mind doesn’t know and doesn’t care. All it needs is to use that empty concept as an anchor point to ground itself.

These are not just word games, you actually believe you are a physical object! As long as you believe that, you cannot Awaken nor realize God. In order to realize God you must undo all of the ego-mind’s finite anchor points. “I am a biological creature made out of atoms” is one of many such anchor points. “I am a soul inside of a physical body” is another common one. All of these anchor points must be deconstructed. The more of them you deconstruct the deeper you will realize God. These anchor points keep your identity/mind/intellect finite.

The very notion that objects have finite discrete substances is a hallucination. Discreteness itself is imaginary. Being discrete is not absolute, yet all of science assumes it is. Your true identity is indiscrete.

Turn your skepticism towards questioning the notion of substance. What is substance? Where did this idea come from? Why do you take it so seriously? What if Reality is not made out of substances at all? What if you have no substance? This is the proper use of skepticism.

This probably won’t make sense right now, but one day it will: If you have no substance, that means you are God.

Another way to put it: God’s substance is everything/nothing simultaneously. God is a superposition of all imaginable substances, qualities, identities.
