The Self-Deception Of Being Good

By Leo Gura - July 23, 2026

One of the most seductive self-deceptions is thinking you are better than you are, gooder than you are. You are not nearly as good as you think you are. That’s very painful to realize. Which is why most people aren’t Good. Evil is when you think are Good without having done the work to become Good. All the most evil people think they are Good, and they are incapable of seeing otherwise. Being evil is a kind of hypnotic spell that one gets lost in, in which you think you are Good when you aren’t. Evil is a kind of delusional self-absorption. All evil people are delusional. Their view of themselves is not accurate, not objective, not truthful. Evil is a disconnection from truth. And in general, people are not even close to understanding how much work is required to become truly Good.

Being the good guy is usually a self-deception.

“I am the good guy.”

That’s where your skepticism should go.

The mind fools itself that it is the good guy when it is just being selfish. This is an amazingly powerful self-deception that most people never see through.
