The Guru's Job

Imagine going to your guru or priest and asking him, “Is 1+1 really 2? I am doubtful. Please tell me.”

It is not the guru’s job to convince you that 1+1=2. If the guru tells you “Yes”, he has failed you. The guru’s job is to help you realize that you can know 1+1=2 by the the light of your own Mind. The guru’s job is not to tell you what the truth is, but to show you that you can find the truth yourself. The guru gives you homework, not the answer.

Don’t ask the guru for the answer, ask the guru what work to do to reach the answer. Ask the guru what work he did to reach the answer.

Why can’t the guru just give you the answer? Because the answer is a profound experience that needs to be created through work.

If you come to a coach and ask him, “What’s it like to run a marathon?” What will be his answer? “Go run a marathon.” Because running a marathon in a profound experience, not a theory. To know what a marathon is, you must run it. A good coach inspires you to run a marathon, knowing that the marathon will educate you. The real guru is the marathon, not the coach. No coach can teach you what the marathon can teach you.

This is why good gurus do not give direct answers. They are not being evasive, they need you to run.
