Jean Baudrillard's Totalitarian Disneyland

This is an excellent summary of the post-modernist philosopher Jean Baudrillard’s work. I recommend watching this whole video. I touched on his work a bit in my The Ultimate Guide To Post-Modernism – Part 2, but I didn’t have time to do it justice.

I want to add an important but overlooked point. Today’s science and academia has become its own simulacrum of sense-making and truth-seeking — its own totalitarian Disneyland. Science and academia have become simulations of themselves. There are even these science-clowns who parade themselves across social media, debating, debunking, and promoting the totalitarian Disneyland that science has become, without an ounce of self-awareness, sniffing their own farts. Science and academia have become a corrupt, incestuous circle-jerk. And, ironically, post-modern philosophy has also devolved into that, with post-modern philosophers jerking each other off as a profession. It’s all a very professional, respectable form of intellectual incest and ontological bankruptcy.

What is Harvard but a totalitarian Disneyland?

See, it’s obvious that Twitter and the 24-hour TV news cycle are self-serving, reality-constructing bubbles. But it’s not as obvious with a place like Harvard. Which is why I underscore this point. The situation is even worse than Baudrillard knew. And to my knowledge, I don’t think Baudrillard provided a real solution or alternative. Our work here is the real solution to this Sense-Making Crisis. Mankind is drowning in mindless, epistemically and spiritually bankrupt, reality-construction. That is what my work aims to solve. That’s why I’m a bit forceful about it, because we have so much simulacrum to cut through to get to the spiritual gold.

Civilization is a hypnotic Carnival of mindless survival, serving no point other than to advance itself. That is why no amount of success within the Carnival is ever truly satisfying. You can work like a rented mule for 40 years and become a billionaire, but at the end of the day you are just a zombie in the Carnival parade, and your spirit is withered from decades of mindless labor.
