From Weed To Religion
By Leo Gura - April 7, 2026
Wild cannabis grows naturally in Central Asia, India, and Afghanistan. It’s just so obvious to me that early humans easily used weed to gain profound insight into God. A human with the right genetics can figure out all of Reality with access to weed alone, which was plentiful in the areas of mankind’s earliest civilizations like Mesopotamia, ancient India, ancient China, ancient Nepal, ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, ancient Middle East. Ancient sages did not need ayahuasca, 5-MeO-DMT, LSD, or mushrooms — nor meditation, nor yoga. They could have done it all with weed alone. All of religion can be derived from weed alone. How much weed did Jesus smoke? We’ll never know. There are exotic theories that Jesus visited and studied under the yogis in India. Dude! He didn’t need to go that far. He just needed to grab some weed from a local ditch.
Books have been written about how the ancients Greeks, Hindus, Egyptians, or whoever, used exotic concoctions like ergotic wheat, or “soma”, or blue lotus — or that Jesus took mushrooms — or some exotic lost race of Atlantians — but the much simpler and more mundane explanation is that they didn’t need any of that when weed was a basic herbalist staple.
The notion that tens of thousands of humans were consuming weed in Central Asia and not having powerful mystical experiences is just pure ignorance of the power of this chemical. I can have as deep a trip on weed as I can on the highest dose of 5-MeO-DMT. The connection between weed and the origins of religion is not recognized enough. Which is why I’m spotlighting it.
You could build the entire Egyptian civilization on weed alone, in the hands of the right individuals. Individuals as sensitive as me. Unsensitive and inexperienced people do not understand its awesome mystical power. They have no idea that you could build a whole religion and civilization around it. You don’t need some stupid stoned ape theory when weed grows everywhere around Central Asia.

Here’s some additional food for thought: certain groups of ancient peoples could have been much more genetically sensitive to psychedelics than modern humans, but the most sensitive and mystical ones were killed off by the survival pressure-cooker, war, genocide, and lust for power. The most spiritually-gifted tribes were probably genocided long ago. We don’t know how sensitive the ancient Egyptians were to weed, for example. The genetics really matter.
If you want to understand how mankind first learned about God, look no further than weed.
Guns, Germs, & Steel?
Nah…
Weed, Religion, & Civilization.
Note: This is not a license to get addicted to weed. That’s not what I’m suggesting.
