Bertrand Russell rejected that math and science needed metaphysics.

He tried to reduce all of mathematics to a formal system of finite syntactic rules devoid of consciousness. He failed. Because truth cannot be circumscribed by any finite formal system, a result formally proven by Tarski’s Undefinability Theorem.
