Why is ghosting and flaking more and more common?

So this article says job and date ghosting is getting more and more common, and the younger the group of people, the more often it's done, the less guilt the individual would feel. Why is this? How come an older individual would generally flake and ghost less? And if they do they will also feel more guilt? But then a younger person generally tends to feel less guilt and ghost dates and employers more often? What's changing in the world that's causing this?
