Can't Catch The Problem Here.

16 posts in this topic

  • Have a genuine interest in studying, exploring and enjoying life, learning about life.
  • University student
  • Have subjects that I believe i'm genuinely interested in
  • can't sit on my ass to study though; I'm able to understand what i am studying, able to excite myself but it only lasts for 30 min and then is gone
  • this isn't just with academics but in general, say reading a self help book.

what is the possible problem here?

me not able to put the effort? sit on my ass? or fear? or fooling myself into thinking that i have the interest in the subjects? I did some contemplation and the rock bottom was that i genuinely want to learn and read but when it comes to practical work, Action, i ain't able to. I feel boredom and lethargic.

anyone got any idea?

What does your daily life look like?

Quite unproductive with just boring mundane work. Working on it. Got a meditation and visualisation practice ( visualising abt studying). That's it

Take it one step at a time. Baby steps. Let's say you want to write a book. You could write a paragraph a day. Within a year, you'll have a lot. Usually, what happens is we expect too much. We try to write a page a day and feel overwhelmed trying to make that perfect page. If you don't have time, write two sentences. Pick topics you love.

Studying is best done in up to 45 minute intervals, then a let's say 10 min break and then repeat.

Studying for hours on end, will give diminishing returns. If you start to procrastinate use the 3 second rule get back on track.

How long have you meditated for, and to you have a concentration practice?

Monkey-mind is a fierce beast, that can take a long time to tame.

I would propose you try various activities that you think are productive and take notes how you feel while your doing them and afterwards having done something.

Writing it down requires you to put your awareness on your feeling.

I'd say you need to ignite some spark in you for something.

I have more questions for you to ask yourself:

How will your life look like when you're 40 years old and you have not changed your course?

How could you make your days fun?

What would make a day great for you?

Are you by any chance worried that you will not be able to succeed what you (think) you want to do?

Do you expect that all effort will be for nothing because you know yourself for starting things but then losing interest or give up because of a problem that comes up?

Would you say that when you try something and it gets challenging, that this is extremely frustrating for you and almost a guarantee that you will give up?

Don't study, Learn :)

If your truly passionate about something you will go all day. Trust me i was told i had ADHD and all the other disorders you can think of as a child but when i found something that i was truly interested in i could stay there deep in the zone while the outside world ceased to exist. It also helps a lot if you don't use TV/Social Media too much because they flood your mind with unnecessary thoughts and thought patterns.

Meditation and Nutraceutical herbal teas can help but ultimately depends on how interested you are on the subject or whatever it is your are learning. So find what makes you feel great, passionate and alive and you will learn like a boss.

You're being complacent. Sounds like you have an expectation that following your passion will be effortless. Like some sort of fairytale adventure.

It won't!

Nope, nope, nope. You'll have to work yourself to the bone for it. Blood, tears, and thousands of hours of grueling labor are the cover charge for passionate conscious living.

While all your friends are off partying, having sex, doing drugs, watching Netflix, playing video games, Twittering away, etc. -- You will have to be down in the dungeon working, hour after hour, day after day, year after year.

You have been so intoxicated by society you don't even know it yet. The escape velocity for mediocrity is very high. What did you think all that intoxication would do to you? You're a junkie plain and simple. All you know how to do is score junk.

If you want to turn the situation around, that's no small feat. It will take everything you've got.

You are God. You are Truth. You are Love. You are Infinity.

Yea, sort of what Leo said.

Facing resistance is an integral part of creating and manifesting our ideas into reality.

Comfort is nice, but it has drawbacks and you have to learn how to balance and face the drawbacks of comfort and how transitioning from comfort/idleness to creation/work often involves facing the resistance or inertia around our motivation.

You have to be able to create when things aren't easy, because it's very rare when things worth creating start off easy.

In other words, there are ALWAYS plateaus in the learning process. You have to learn how to move through plateaus, especially when they feel like walking through quicksand while hell monkeys are flinging burning piles of shit into your face.

The more you can go through the hardest parts, without "needing" even the smallest amount of hype or pick-me-up the better. So then, when you get through it and it becomes effortless you are able to enjoy it more and not be dependent on that flow to resume work again or face that next plateau.

In life we have to grow to be proficient with both sides of creation. The effortless beauty and magic, plus the quicksand hell-monkey shit flinging :)

Your brain can take twenty minutes at a time of information before it goes and you need a break. Its actually one of the reasons are school system is so shoddy - an adult will struggle for thirty minutes of concentration but we force children too for an hour in class.

You should be having a break every twenty minutes. :) and going back to it fresh :)

(yes Im aware you can train your brain, visualise etc BUT this is a short term solution to your problem!

Meditation? A month. A concentration practice of 3 minutes. I know it's too little but keeping simple and focusing on improving consistency

Does "hard work" mean that it's not fun? Could an activity be fun and productive at the same time?

Saying you are messed up or something similar is a good reason to tell yourself why you have no chance.

Are there areas where you are productive and have no problem finishing?

If the idea of your life at 40 years old if you don't change scares you, then this could be a great motivator. You could write the number 40 on some pieces of paper or Post-It notes and pin it in your home where you regularly see them.

A way I made progress was taking a little notebook and writing down things that I had procrastinated on because I had thought they would be hard to do but found out they were not so hard when I actually did them. Pretty quickly you doubt your judgement and start to be curious if this or that are really that difficult and start just trying it.
