Focus For Visualisations

3 posts in this topic

Ahoy there. I've been struggling for circa 6 months with keeping focus during visualisations. My mind is particularly difficult to tame - don't even get me started on my 5 year struggles with meditation, although I'm starting to find peace in those sessions these days. My mind wanders around like crazy when I start visualising situations, just seems impossible to focus with all the imagined stimuli of the scenario sparking off thought trails all over the place. Anyone got any tips?

Keeping mental focus on an activity is both shared by visualization and meditation. Fundamentally we're speaking about the same thing.

I personally have a curiosity into which aspects of my visualization works. I'm keeping mental tabs and tracking what works and what doesn't. Kind of a neurotic attitude but keeps the job done.

That would be like:

(oh I'm getting nervous that means I'm visualizing the situation well and going through as though it's a real one so it's +1 experience point. Let me sit with it and watch this sensation (apply other techniques as well xD) let me continue this scenario it seems a hard one yet one I can visualize that I can do.)

Cheers Phrae sorry for the delayed reply!

I recognize that meditation and visualisation share the need to keep mental focus. What I find more challenging about visualisation, though, is that there are more stimuli in my mental field than meditation - I'm actually putting them there for the exercise. These stimuli are distracting me. So for example, if I'm imagining a scenario where I want to behave a certain way, any aspect of that scene (people involved, the physical space, etc), is likely to spark a trail of thought that moves me away from the visualisation. I'm finding it much more difficult than meditation, where all I have to do is keep my mind empty.
