Selfishness Proves Oneness

7 posts in this topic

This is just an insight I had.

I was thinking about how everything anyone does is selfish. Obviously there is what we normally think of as selfish, but also altruism. If we do something for the good of someone else, that’s only because it makes us feel good. In other words, because we include them in our idea of self. Then I realized that our degree of selfishness or selflessness depends on how  large our idea of self is. If it includes the whole universe then that is infinite selfishness— which is synonymous with selflessness. And this is basically what oneness is.

You can take it another step further. The only reason that altruism makes you feel good is because it allows you to "fix" something outside yourself that is "broken" inside yourself. It is kind of wish fulfilling by proxy.

Note how you only get pulled by issues that mean something to you, and how something only means something to you because of your own baggage that you carry around it.

The things you try to fix outside yourself are really only ever about you. In fact the whole universe is just a projection of your own issues.

By your logic, "whole" people would be trying to fix the world (like Leo). But this is false. Whole people don't try to fix anything, because they don't see anything as wrong or in need of fixing. There is nothing broken in them to get pulled. If there is, it just means they are themselves not healed yet.

Note also the inverse nature of "healing". Trauma represents the presence of baggage, healing represents the removal of baggage. Like erasing crayon from a sheet of paper. Nothing actually gets healed because nothing was actually broken, just released. Liberated. Vanished as if it never was. Healing is a misleading metaphor.

Makes sense

In short, altruism* is not love, it's fear.

* as distinct from "right action" which is dispassionate and with no investment in results.

Are you agreeing with the OP, though, and everything that was said and you're just adding to that?

I agree with his observation on altruism.

The infinite selfishness thing is cute but imo misleading. That would be infinite fear, or maximum investment in outcomes. Close but no cigar.

Human "caring" is basically a hideous perversion of anything you might call love. Understandable though it is, it is infinitely misguided.

You don't get to oneness through maximum ego. That's inevitably what it wants (like Leo), but that's clearly not how it works.

I think that's the real lesson here. A caution against the treacherous cunning of ego-preservation.

Ok

I literally had this insight an hour ago, I keep distracting myself with content to expand my knowledge but my subconscious knows I'm only deluding myself by not being presently engaged and at this point I'm ever more aware of my own ego mechanisms. While reading another post and finding something to complain about internally, I thought "The only meaningful part about any information is my reaction to it".

On psychedelics, I am made to realize the minutia of my problems and how ease they they are to solve and how huge the conceptual fear perpetuation machine is and how much time and energy it is wasting. I already know where it's going, it doesn't take much to build that intuition that keeps repeating oneself despite one's own resistance and dismissal of it: "I shouldn't be discontent, if I am, there is something that occupies my mind and drains my energy, I can take care of that and there's nothing more meaningful to do than that, because it's the source of all future action".

Yet despite the memory of my trips, I can't will my awareness and emotional harmony into being, I have to learn to reach that state of mind through skillful mindful navigation of reality and mind. reality is a subset of mind but just as valid of a dimension and a great test for resistance and fear.

Yet, without the concept of Oneself, Love is freely given and recieved with no boundries.

Infinite Self-lessness.
