God Is Watching Us From A Distance

8 posts in this topic

The first time I heard this song was when I was a young boy. I couldn't speak or even understand English at the time because I'm from a 3rd world country in Asia. English is not my native language. But I used to love this song because of its passionate and beautiful melody.

I watched a YouTube video about the struggles of a class-A actor in my home country two hours ago. He was at his peak as an actor in the late 1980s but lost popularity in his 30s. He went through a divorce, lost custody of his children, became a drug and alcohol addict, faced suicidal thoughts, financial struggles, and suffered a stroke in his 40s which nearly ended his painful existence, leading to a near-death experience (NDE). As the video neared its end, he revealed he hadn't talked to his kids for a few years. He mentioned checking their social media pages regularly to monitor them from a distance. That was how I remembered the song entitled "From a Distance". I hadn't listened to it for decades, but it suddenly popped into my head. Such is the power of the human brain.

Now, listening to the song as an adult with English proficiency, I'm surprised how spiritual the song is.

But first, here's a little background on the song: It became an international commercial success after Bette Midler recorded it in 1990 for the album "Some People's Lives". "From a Distance" reached number one on the Adult Contemporary chart and peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The song went on to win a Grammy for Song of the Year in 1991 and also received a '3 Million Airs Award' from Broadcast Music Incorporated. The song's writer is Julie Gold, who believes in an immanent God, meaning that God encompasses and manifests in the material universe.

The song can be interpreted in various ways. In my interpretation, every instance of knee joint pain, toothache, Hashimoto's disease, rape, panic attack, anxiety, depression, self-murder via hanging or gunshot wound to the head, murder via stabbing or carpet bombing, war, political corruption, cancer, leprosy, incel, starvation, bankruptcy, exploitation, scam, and more is harmony if viewed from a distance. And this view from a distance is GOD's perspective. God is watching every torture and horror in the world from a distance, hence GOD sees perfection in it. Of course, it's harmony and perfection because God's perspective is unlimited and holistic.

How can an entity with an unlimited perspective and intelligence commit an error in its grand design? That's not possible. If there's a faulty perspective, it's the limited perspective, which is my perspective and yours.

So, should I neglect my perspective while living as a human because it's limited and faulty in some ways? Should I be indifferent to every evil, torture, and horror in the world just because, in God's eyes, it's perfection and harmony? Some naive or pretentious spiritual humans would say "Yes".

My answer is a resounding "NO"! It's true my limited perspective is inferior to God's. But my perspective is all I have. Honoring my perspective, though limited and erroneous in the grandest scheme of things, is actually more genuine than pretending to see perfection and harmony in all the horrors and tragedies in the world. And honoring my perspective is an act of self-acceptance and self-love.

It can also be a dog which looks similar to a wolf. Regardless, it surely looks beautiful. And that's one of the reasons why I chose this video. I almost forgot to mention I find the Japanese translations interesting. :D
