Is this an example of a Zen devil?

7 posts in this topic

I can't say I am 100% sure of the translation of him saying "Be cool, without compassion or mercy" , but the idea of a Zen master spreading 'wisdom' about how to kill 'better' especially in regards to such controversial conflict, and also at a time when the morality of waging this war in itself is highly questionable, is just really unsettling and disturbing.  Seems like taking advantage of the dissociative qualities of meditation and use it as a tool to make shooting and bombing 'easier' for one's mental health.

It's neither a zen mastery or devilry. It's how you train soldiers to not get killed in the battle.

Which by definition makes it zen devilry, taking out of context a spiritual truth or spiritual techniques to be weaponized in another context.

For example, LSD or psychedelic experiences in themselves are not Zen Devilry, but when people, say Charles Manson, uses it to further his cult like dynamics and control to influence his followers.

@An young being  Another example, say I'm a nihilist, it's considered Zen devilry when I take Buddha's teaches of caseation to confirm my nihilism and life being meaningless, and confirm my victim mentality and depression.

Another historical example, Nazi Germany used the Swastika, which original is a windmill symbol of world peace in Buddhism, for their Aryan race symbolism. Also taking no-self experiences as a way to justify their atrocities is another form of Zen Devilry.

'Fight without compassion against your enemy soldiers' might have turned out to be a good advice. Him saying 'Fight without compassion' doesn't sound good enough on its own.
