Crazy Idea for a Inverse-Psychedelic

7 posts in this topic

So the way we understand psychedelics is really just a substance with a certain structure similar to serotonin activating some of the receptors (mostly 5-HT2A), right? So then that leads to high serotonin activation which I assume changes one's state of mind and interconnects different brain regions.

Well, how about deliberately doing the opposite and using a substance that for a similar duration blocks or limits serotonin activation instead. That would probably put oneself into a low energy, despairing, depressive, maybe even psychotic state of mind instead. But then, if you could integrate living at that bad a state into your natural understanding of yourself, that would be extremely powerful. Mapping the change in perception and being able to enter in and out would teach us so much and give us so much resilience if we could bear through it. So we're not just high on psychedelics and open ourselves up to the deepest love and understanding, but also experience the deepest despair, hate and suffering instead to become even more whole and integrate all aspects of ourselves. But that's just crazy talk, right?

Nope! Scientists have already been working on that already, with great results!!

have you heard of any dissociative substances? Dxm probably fits the bill most to what you're talking about...

We don't really know how substances work, like, at all. All we can do is observe some effects of them in the brain. But how they actually work remains mostly a mystery.

For example, we did observe that depressive patients have lower concentrations of serotonin in the brain. So the obvious solution was to develop drugs that boost the concentration of serotonin. That's a very very crude understanding of what's actually happening and, in fact, serotonin boosting drugs often times work only very slightly better than placebo.

Psychedelics are generally antiserotonergic, partial agonists/antagonists of the 5ht2 receptors which compete with serotonin, such as mirtazapine, trazodone, etc.
5HT1 partly have the opposite effect in that they greatly increase the release of glutamate/dopamine/noradrenaline, while decreasing the circulating amount of serotonin and therefore 5HT neurotransmition.
No idea for marginal receivers 5ht3/4/5/6/7.

LSD (and even more ergo derivatives like Metergoline, Cabergoline, Lisuride...) is basically the most antiserotonergic psychedelic (stimulant, high libido/sexual urges, acceleration of thought, conceptual thinking, dellusion, no nausea , no risk of overdose).
5-MeO-DMT is the one that seems to behave the most like a serotonergic product (reduction in the flow of thoughts, lack of hallucinations, lucidity, nausea, risk of serotonin syndrome)

Then it all depends on your genetics, such as the distribution, density and especially ratio of the different monoamine receptors in the different parts of your brain.
