Phrases to use when you don't want to be close with them

I've noticed Americans are generally friendlier than Canadians. Every time I come back from US to Canada, I start to act friendlier to people here, but Canadians always assume that that's the "go ahead" signal for them to try to become friends with me when I'm just being "American polite." What are some graceful phrases/words to indicate that I don't want to be close with you -- without killing the vibe or creating awkwardness?
