What Is Self Destructive Behaviour ?

5 posts in this topic

Is it possible to be self destructive and not be aware of it.

Can a person be inherently self destructive.

Sure, all of us are self-destructive when we are unaware.

Example in this moment, I am sitting and working on my computer, completely slouched. Until I read your post, I was completely unaware of the way I sit. Now I brought awareness to it and straightened my back. It is just the matter of time until I go back to slouching, unaware behaviour,

Yeah I guess. The default drivers for humans are immediate comfort, security etc. which very quickly become self destructive behaviors. In my own experience I'm starting to see that 90% of what I do everyday (or maybe even more) is just noise and self created suffering. There are a lot healthier ways to deal with the same life situation.

Even when doing so called "good" things like meditation, exercising etc its very easy to lose the fine balance and unconsciously dive into the self destructive or self sabotaging behaviors and eventually collapse and get beat down.

I think so, it's hard for me to notice my behaviours, I am realizing, as each moment is an individual emotional state without any understanding of that emotion.  I think people who understand fully the nature of how self destructive they are try to change it, but I will probably forget the nature when I am consumed by another emotion.

So awareness is curative, but staying awake to it, well that's another tale entirely.  Most self-destructive behaviours are an avoidance of something deep down inside. I think?  Idk.

@Loreena No one is inherently anything but what they've been repeating (including environment and influences).

The "wake up" is when one realizes this and makes changes to what they've been repeating both in their self talk and what is around them.

No one is anything more than the experience of these repeated things.

We are limited by the knowledge of what has been repeated in this life, vs knowing what may have been repeated before this life.

It is a probabilistic universe. Not deterministic.  We will likely do the most probable thing, but we always have the choice.
