I think most of us can agree that criminal justice should be focused on rehabilitation and prevention. Finland takes rehabilitation to an extreme that seemingly gives an incentive to murder people.

An interesting question to pose here:

Say we reduce criminality to a certain point where we no longer see any signs of it ever getting even lower. And say that we have a system where basically, if you murder someone, you go take therapy for two weeks and you can leave and be free.

Say that by increasing sentencing or locking murderers up we would not decrease criminality at all, there would be not benefit in that regard ata ll. Would you be in favour or against locking murderers up to penalize them?

@Scholar I would be because penalising them would still have the benefit of meeting the public's and victim's need for justice. One of my criticisms of rehabilitation is that i don't think it takes enough consideration of the victim's need for justice.

Lets say somebody killed your wife and you are unhappy with his punishment ( 2 weeks therapy or whatever you said)  

then you can just kill the killer and also do two weeks of therapy and get out

Prisoners in America are locked into concrete boxes with no time outdoors in nature, causing them to go insane. When this insanity leads to aggression violence, we punish them by locking them into a concrete box again (more jail time and solitary confinement). This causes the prisoner to go insane, leading to violence and aggression, which is punished by putting the prisoner in a concrete box.

Prisoners are as well required to report their criminal records on job applications, as well as college applications. They also have massive gaps in their resume due to the prison time.

@Leo Gura Got boys in Russia who would take anyone to the gulag at a moment's notice. Really makes me happy we live in the west where things are a lot more liberal and safe. Finland is a pretty liberal country, so that's why they're happier there than they would be in Russia. I agree man, being liberal and pushing consciousness forward and creativity forward is the real dream come true.

Right, and say this does not increase murders overall, and by locking people up you will also not decrease murders.

There’s also the fact that prisoners are completely deprived of sex, which is harmful and leads to aggression and psychological diseases, as (according to both Abraham Maslow) it is a base physiological need.

I just saw this a few days ago. And towards the end, seeing how he would hv to spent the rest of his life in prison with only one hour out of 24hours to do everything or have any movement, I think it's a bit cruel. 

The person who are gone are gone.

Short-sighted way of thinking. "Penalising them" means penalizing society.

Crime is not just an individual problem but also a collective problem and responsibility. Revenge cannot be part of justice in a civilized society.

Individual desire for revenge is something developed societies have to move away from.

Besides, why spend money to lock up someone who has been rehabilitated? 

You want that person working and contributing to society, a functioning citizen.
