Donating to charity?

I recently stumbled upon the idea of donating to charity as a way to boost one's self-esteem and further a cause your passionate about. 

To be honest, I think the guilt tripping of fundraising in the past has kind off ruined those charities for starving kids for me. I'm also wary of when a fundraiser is a scam, like when most of the proceeds go to the organization itself.

So I'm wondering what you guys donate to if at all and what? I'm especially curious about causes that are non-poverty related.

I donate all the time. To my church, to other non-profit charity organisation. Also donate to beggars I see. Also donate to orphans overseas.

I try to reduce them though. If I donate more to beggars, I will donate to the organisations less because I feel I am struggling myself.

I donate a bit and you are right. To the Fred Hollows Foundation and things like the World Wide Fund for Nature Australia and a lot for animals such as Cats and Dogs Havens. In the end, it is up to you. Do it for the right reasons not because you feel guilty but out of Love. And I always do it anonymously but that is also up to you. And of course, always research the place you are donating to because there are a lot of scams out there.
