How to find my life purpose?

12 posts in this topic

I am 26 years old. Up until recently I was more or less guided in life: school.. college etc.. Now I've started working just yesterday..and although I like what I do.. I feel like I'm not "fulfilled". I got this job because it was in the same city as my girlfriend.. and I thought it was the logical continuation to life: work and settle with a "7" girl . The thing is.. we broke up a couple of weeks ago and I'm starting to requestion everything.

What do I want out of life? I feel like surviving is too easy. I don't make a lot of money . But it's enough for food and rent and I'm not really a very materialistic person. Sometimes I would like to have real problems just to challenge myself. I have a lot of free time and don't know what to do with it (my job is completely stress-free). I've started several projects (web apps) but I always end up abandoning them from lack of motivation and just watch tv series or documentaries and bindge on YouTube or Netflixor Porn etc (which I enjoy but it doesn't feel very productive). I think I need someone to challenge me to be motivated.. and for some reason that someone can't be me.

Any advice appreciated ?

The only thing I'm interested in is philosophy and science.

Yes, you do stuff.
The proof, you interact regularly with people from all over the world on a personal development forum.
You also have a job.

I don't see where the problem is if you're fine.

I'm not fine . I'm interested in philosophy. I want to become just like Leo. Start my own business or YT channel and ramble about metaphysical woo-woo.  I work at Starbucks. It's a wage slave job. It makes ends meet but I want something more joyful and creative . Like art ..music..philosophy etc

You do what you want but it looks like an ego problem.
Anyway it's quite simple, if an intension comes mainly from the ego you won't have the energy to do it.

Incidentally, succeeding in becoming a popular personality on youtube requires a rather impressive contest of circumstances.

Art can be very boring if you suck or don't care.
maybe you would really like to be a carpenter.

Sounds like the real issue could be a lack of serious work ethic. I don't know the first thing about philosophy but unless you plan to become an academic tutor and get paid by an institution such as university, then you'll have to figure out how to become a business owner and get paid by clients (e.g. Youtube stream from views & adds )

If you are serious about starting some sort of business in philosophy or otherwise, you just have to embrace the work it requires. Being a biz owner means hundreds of hours pouring down boring work like marketing, website, SEO, content development, editing, research. Because how else are you going to get found by the people who are supposed to pay you? Becoming an influencer in 2023 is getting insanely difficult, not impossible just ridiculously difficult.

The earlier you can swallow that bitter truth the better. If you need to be excited and highly stimulated to work, otherwise you abandon all projects, then it's never going to happen. Pick a project and pursue it to the end even if you have to push through boredom and work till 3 am.  Some of my greatest progress were times when I felt the most bored with the work I was doing. The exciting stuff is usually pretty fleeting.

I'm not a fan of content like David Goggins and the whole bro culture but one thing they say I absolutely agree. Unless you are willing to commit your mind, your heart and your time and pursue that thing as if your life depended on it, it won't ever happen.

The more often you quit the more difficult it becomes to finish something because your mind will associate difficulty with reason to quit.

If you're saying you have a lot of free time, stable income and desire to make a difference then that puts you in a  very fortunate position to pursue a private endeavour :) Embrace it while you're young, without kids and without major obligations. You'll be in your 30s and mid 30s before you know it

I study business and marketing in university. I wanted to study philosophy or psychology but there just wasn't that domain in my city . So I made a choice between literature &history or business. I picked up business because it seemed the less complex .

I can't be a philosophy professor in a college because I don't have a philosophy degree. However, like I said I want to become a true philosopher who writes books and publish then. Typical philosophy work like Nietzsche, Descartes etc but I still haven't figured out the how's and the whys .

I know. Thanks for the "encouragement"?.

The expense of launching a business in India is exorbitant..and the procedures might be intimidating if you don't know what you're doing.

Any tips on how to make work enjoyable?  I made a rule on my vision board that I won't be doing anything in this life unless I'm deeply passionate and feel enthusiastic about it .is that just a false expectation based on lack of experience from my part ?

I agree . But I have the burning desire to pursue my goals in life . I just need a little push .a little piece of luck and I promise I will do all the hard work required.

Recently.. I've noticed that I've started to restructure my priorities and put a lot of the somewhat more trivial things I used to really care about behind me (partying ... what others think of me..fiitting in, getting girls to notice me etc...) and now all I can ever really think about is succeeding at reaching my goals. I'm so focused on it..that I've become borderline obsessed with it.

Nothing external will do it. You need to get to know yourself as a character and personality.

What makes you tick? Find that out and get clear on that. Explore and experiment. After trying out stuff, stick with what you like.

Purpose isn't found but created.

Start the process of discovering/ creating your life purpose by doing research.

About the issue of motivation: you can act without feeling motivated. No need for that. Start by adopting empowering attitudes and dispositions instead of waiting around for inspiration to strike. Consider that everyone takes a shower, goes to work, etc. everyday regardless of how they feel. It's about doing it, not about being motivated or not.

Again, this is something you must do, no one else will do it for you.

Sounds like something Rupert Spira would say  ? (nah just kidding lol).

I think life purpose is to be discovered or found is pretty similar..but to choose that is different. Sometimes a purpose is given to you.."presented" if you will. You might by the son of a beggar or the son of a King.

This is where choice comes in. I must choose a different script a  different role.

I like philosophy..Science..any intellectual work. But can't become a famous scientist or philosopher with a business degree.

@Someone here Sounds like Leo's Life Purpose course is perfect for you.

Learn to enjoy the grind by coming into flow and making distinctions during each grind session. This is how you make it your art. Focus on your enjoyment of the medium (coding, sculpturing, writing,..). Focus on the depth and beauty of the grind. It's a subtle taste that can easily be missed especially when one isn't committed to the grind for a few months. It's normal to dislike the grindy hard work in the beginning.

(That's what I know from the LP course)

Did you take Leo's LP course?  I had a little trouble knowing what I wanted to do with my life and it really helped. I discovered that it is writing,  and passive income work... but after a long time of failures, I learned that I have to maximize many of my qualities and attributes that I discovered from the course, before I could even face my LP. In fact, I spend so much time building these character traits that these traits will not let me stop working on my LP lol. For instances of my traits is to learn, so  I made a commitment to learn about one subject a week, just the basics like a "Great Courses" set of lectures or a dummies book on audio or something. I did this for years, and know I just have this need inside of me to learn something about my LP and passive income every week. I mean I really go nuts if I keep trying to put it off, or make excuses or procrastinate, the urge burns like an addition lol

So that is my advice, learn your core values and put everything you got into building them.

What you resist, persists and less of you exists. There is a part of you that never leaves. You are not in; you have never been. You know. You put it there and time stretches.

oo I thought you were in Germany ! would have sworn I saw you saying that :D Oh yeah if I new that, my comment would have been more compassionate, I understand it is more difficult to start a business over there for a young individual. Perhaps it is easier than years ago so I'm sure that has to account for something.

I agree, there needs to be a passion there otherwise the whole thing becomes meaningless. But from my experience even if you are deeply passionate there will be times when you are working on a project (related to that) that is just incredibly boring and frustrating. It is important not to quit when in the middle of that but to be able to reconnect with the thing that motivated you to start in the first place. Journaling on these things used to work for me although I don't journal as much anymore. I also like to review my notes from the LP course often, that helps me reconnect with the times when the fire of passion and motivation was blazing.

Organising your calendar a bit might work. I understand that the time at work, you have no control over but maybe at the beginning of the week plan the slots after work and if you have some spare energy , time block some activities that are actually meaningful. I do a calendar review on Sunday evening and then I try to do it at the end of each day (I don't always get to it) but having a sense of schedule makes it more difficult to procrastinate and waste time (which I still do ofcourse)

could you get mentoring? Someone local in India to inspire you and push you. They are not cheap but a good mentor who won't tolerate bullshit is worth his weight in money.
