GBL/GBH is popular as a rape drug because of its high potency and ease of use against girls, so it has a very negative presence in the media. Alcohol destroys your liver and brain and causes cancer. GBL doesn't and it is way cheaper to synthesize a chemical in a lab than in a factory. it also works in the range of milligrams, So it can be diluted in beverages.
