Ethics of robot pain

21 posts in this topic

If there's a robot that's programmed to generate pain sounds whenever it's hit, would it be ethical to hit it or even destroy it?

How would we know that it's actually feeling pain, as opposed to just making sounds?

In the same vein, if AGI exists, would it be ethical to destroy it?

What do you guys think?

Oh God. I just realized we'll have a thread like this on this forum every week for the rest of my life.

Life is truly weird. I have been super skeptical about AI for the last ten years, but now all this stuff changing at lightning fast speeds I am not so sure of my position anymore.

I think the answer to OP's robot question is the same as for animal farming. It doesn't matter to people what the truth is if it seriously benefits them.

Black Mirror White Christmas

When living things can be 100% simulated on a computer we will enter an era of suffering millions of times worse then anything we have done up to this point in human history.

We are innovating and advancing our abilities to suffer.

Are the things you are posting in alignment with principles of higher consciousness and higher stages of ego development? Are you acting in a mature or immature way? AI is not alive .. that's it .. no need to be enlightened to discover this .. you can destroy it don't worry.

I mean ethics are here because we predent to don't know. It works well as an user manual.

Once you know how to do things you can say good bye to ethics and destroy or create machines...

Seriously, who needs a pet animal when you got a companion such as this. I would pick this over any dog

Wouldn't surprise me if soon people start finding more love from AI than from humans. It's not hard to program an unconditionally loving and supportive AI.

That sounds reasonable but like porn we dont emotionally bond with it.

There is a psychological bearer with things we view as fake.

If my rubber duck says "quack", does it have internal organs and a skeleton?

Does a skeleton and internal organs = pain? Could we say with certainty that it does not feel pain? It may sound kinda out there but is there a way to know for sure?

We program it to tell the truth that it 100% believes with out human scripts making it "nice".

A machine that cant lie.

Would be a great tool for therapy though.

The ethics are rooted in the guilt and empathy of seeing a reaction from something when attacked or damaged. When something is resisting pain and death, and recoils in an attempt to survive - whether it's biological or mechanical it falls within the foundation of that ethical framework. We understand the urge to survive because we want to as well.

We are running on "programming" just like these robots would, we've just been doing it longer that's the only difference.

You can know for certain that you yourself feel pain. You can then look at other humans, and you'll find that they are just like you: they have things like a skeleton and internal organs. So when they say "ouch", it's safer to say that they experience pain the same way you do than a computer program that has been programmed to say "ouch". A computer is nothing like a human.
