Self-inquiry + Imprinting Beliefs

hey,

isn't self-inquiry/spiritual purification and at the same time imprinting beliefs about yourself contradictory?

(working to get rid of strong beliefs vs. working to imprint new strong beliefs)

could someone please help me to overcome this newbie-trap? :-)
