Mastering Work You Hate?

13 posts in this topic

Peter recalls a story of his younger self washing dishes and working overtime to master and enjoy dishwashing.

I follow the opposite approach when it comes to my current job, I try to do the least amount of work possible, and if I can guarantee that my work won't be checked/reviewed, I leave errors because I can't care enough to fix it or learn to master the job. But now, I am getting by and have received a promotion (I honestly don't know how that happened, lol).

What are your ideas about this? Does mastering the current work you're in indirectly help you to master your life purpose?

It's still not ideal. You want to move towards your LP as soon as you can.

What I think is the core to happiness here is to realized that whatever you want you can use that power of enjoying mastery of what is happening right now.

Maybe I have to work the job I hate to save some money for aventureous travelling, and I can get to enjoy the process.

But as well I can quit the job today and master the feeling of anxiety that comes from not having a stable job, and enjoying the process. I can master being happy while poor. I can take it in totally two different ways and in both of them I would be a happy master. So just realize what do you really want, and master that.

You can master whatever. That is freedom

Do everything to the best of your ability. No matter what it is.

Yes absolutely. But in the meantime, what would you recommend? Do you think it's wise to put minimum effort to maximize my effort/time toward life's purpose?

More generally, do you have any insights (other than the obvious stuff like working hard/ Life advice for young ppl vid)?

Really struggling in this area...

If you can get a job you love and correspond to your likes and interests, you are indeed lucky.

If you are not that lucky, you need to discipline your mind to enjoy the work you are doing. You should take some time to think on the benefits with respect to money and skills you will be gaining from this job, and which can come useful in the pursuits that you truly enjoy.

By cultivating an interest in your job and consciously enjoying it, you will become more proficient in the work and will also have more energy levels and creativity. It is also easier to memorize the details of work that you enjoy, and obviously details count a lot in terms of ensuring quality .

If you hate your job, you will have to spend much more time and energy mastering it as reluctance will bring about lower energy levels and casualness.

i would advise to learn how to learn and try to learn how to work efficiently, that is how you will become clever enough to pursue your LP later, because you will also do many things you hate in your area of LP. But of you truly can be at least neutral doing it and be somewhat efficient, the things after that are better and you will save your ass from disasters from your errors at work, and get a promotion and do something more responsible.

It’s always an opportunity to practice mindfulness.

I’d still reevaluate how stuck you really are in your career situation and if something could be sacrificed so that you can serve more of a meaningful contribution sooner

You can never master something you hate, you must learn to love it to develop any true mastery.

Correct.

And more to the point: Why would you want to?

I don’t know. Sometimes it’s out of our control.

For example, I have OCD. For a very long time it was not being properly treated. The “OCD bully” was the master over me and it destroyed every aspect of my life. However, when I committed to understanding and loving Truth seriously, my values started to shift drastically. I can clearly see now that the OCD bully cannot be a master over me if I don’t allow it to (I’ve done a shit ton of therapy and work to get to where I am now).

Maybe the plot twist is this: The OCD bully made me hate myself so much, that I realized the only way to transcend it is to love it to death (metaphorically speaking).

I AM false

You are always in control. The OCD bully is but a 'mask' of the mind. It will find any excuse to hide and avoiding taking full responsibility of its creation.
