@nick96
1. Personality - constitant role or mask you adopt, in order to function. This needs to be shattered to pieces.
2. Embodiment of your highest inner values. That is a never-ending blissful and rewarding journey.

You can switch personalities once you get to higher levels of PD. People may consider you "fake" afterwards, because you won't be consistent with their image of you, but that is quite alright. You simply choose to embody different opinions as you act as a mirror for others more and more.

Personality is borrowed. It is given to you by society. It is just like clothes, subtle clothes. Society wants you to have personalities, not individualities, because your individualities will create conflict. The society hides your individuality and gives you a personality.

Personality is a learned thing. The word personality comes from a Latin root that means “mask”—persona. Personality is false. The whole society depends on personality. Personality is that which you are not, but try to show that you are. Personality is that which, when you move in society, you have to use as a convenience.

When the child is born we start giving him personality - by educating him, by giving him a certain religious attitude, by imparting some philosophy, some political ideology. Slowly slowly, brick by brick, we create a structure around him in which he becomes imprisoned, so much so that he starts feeling identified with the edifice created by others around him. He does not feel imprisoned.

The ego is the center of the personality. The ego lives on claims. The ego is competitive and personality goes on feeding it through subtle ways. Personality is the circumference of your pretensions, of your exhibitions, of your deceptions, and ego is the center. They go together, they remain together.

The ego can find food from anywhere. Whatsoever the game, I am the top. Whatsoever the game -- the name of the game may be humbleness, but I am the topmost humble man. The names can be different. Always remember that whenever you start feeling that you are the topmost -- maybe it is humbleness, it makes no difference; maybe it is egolessness, it makes no difference -- if you think that you are the most egoless person in the world you are again in the same trap.

Thanks for answering!

In this other post :

Leo Gura said that personality and ego are two very different things and that personality remains also in person that achieve enlightenment.

He also said that personality is not rooted in beliefs.

I imagine that from how you define personality here you mean the ego and the behaviours it generates in the person.

I think Leo refers to a true, intrinsic personality that is not distorted by the ego. It is this that I am asking about .

Where is this true personality rooted inside the person ?

Leo is using term 'personality' for the 'individuality' of a person. We are born with it.

What you call 'true personality' is your individuality, your essence. You come with it. You are born with it.

When you drop your fake personality, ego --- live consciously, meditatively, then you have a individuality or 'true personality'.

So what is exactly my true personality inside of me ? The ego for example is a mostly subconscious mental structure with beliefs about all my personal characteristics and my model of reality . Similarly, what is in this sense my true personality ?

Or is true personality just connected to the fact of living consciously, so over the level of identification with thoughts and emotions, and so it isn't a "thing" inside the mind ?

Personality is how you naturally express yourself. The personality doesn't depend on anything. The ego is the imaginary self-image you try to protect. Ego prevents you from expressing your true personality because you would get a lot of haters for doing so. Unfortunately, the ego causes us to hold onto a lot baggage.

But how can true personality not depend on anything ? I imagine there must be something inside me that makes me express authentically in the way I do, or not ?

In general, an ego that is more similar to true personality facilitates emotionally ( makes less emotionally challenging ) to express oneself , right ?

Personality depends on thoughts and feelings, which are changing every moment without rationalizing. When you want to say "yes", do it. When you want to say "no", do it. If you say "yes" when you want to say no, that's ego. You lied to yourself and the other person, which strengthens the ego.

I think personality is a combination of something intrinsic about you and the current state of development for you. So for example, I tend to be service-oriented. That element is in me and manifests in a lot of what I do or say. But I could go through a period of depression where that service orientation is expressed differently from when I go through a period of calm. And outside observer may evaluate me as needy or helpful depending on when they observed me, but the personality is neither nor both. They are the intrinsic elements (at least in this lifetime) filtered through the conditions I am engaged in. The consistency of the personality is a reflection of the consistency of the filters I use. In this sense, I agree that personality can appear to change. But if you observe closely, that same intrinsic value is always and still there no matter what.

1. To me, the optimal scenario would be living in society but with no personality, only individuality, true personality! But that isn't a option, since you create conflict without the false personality. Thus, you have to choose! Either live consciously outside mainstream society or to live in it, and consume its fruits, but then you must operate from what is NOT the essence of you, the false personality!

It is very difficult to demolish the personality, because we become greatly attached to it. We even feel that our personality is our very nature, we think it is what we really are.

Even if you manage to make just a few holes in it, you will feel a small fresh breeze coming from your true nature. It is not necessary to demolish it completely , you would find yourself against the society. It is enough for you to become capable of taking off and putting on this mask as you want. When you are meditating , you no longer remain a personality, you become only a soul. In this way outer world becomes a drama for you and you start acting in it. An intelligent person will inevitably live in the society as actor acting, and in no other way. His relationship with society is only that of being an actor in a play.

2. Can you imagine a society in future or history when it is possible to combine the two! That means to live fully integrated in society but with no personality, just your true individuality! That would be heaven, wouldn't it? Like an utopia?

New forms of  collectivities will have to come into being, where people are not only living together, but where people are in deep communion.

Right now everybody is forced to be according to the ideas of others. That causes misery and great anguish, and takes all joy and gladness from life. Everybody should be himself and contribute to life according to his way, by creating music, or by creating paintings, or by writing poetry, or by producing better fruit, better crops, making better roads. Everyone should be allowed to have his own potential fulfilled.

A model society will give dignity to every individual. A model society will create as much intelligence as possible, and will allow people to grow intelligently, to search and seek for their truth, because that is how one becomes more intelligent.

Yourre wrong. It is quite easy to live without the mask. You just gotta be ok with not pleasing everyone.

If you drop your personality completely, it becomes very difficult to adjust in society. A Jesus is crucified, a Socrates is poisoned, a Mansoor is chopped, Buddha, Mahavira are stoned. They were the most loving, most compassionate human beings possible.

In this century they might not be killed, because men has developed more subtle techniques to deal with them, it doesn't mean they can adjust in society.

@Prabhaker god. Dont be a lame victimized pussy. You can live your Truth fully without being somehow terrorized by society. Look at all the spiritual teachers. Think they're fake in their private lives?

Being true to your nature doesn't mean disturb the shit out of everyone. If you don't wish to disturb then don't, there is nothing inauthentic about that.

I am sorry I am emotionally disturbed rn and you have nothing to do with that but for some reason I have a very strong urge to say this.

Your cowardice disgusts me, and makes me physically sick.

Don't be a fucking douchey little sissy. Earth doesn't need that right now.

There were hundreds of so called spiritual teachers in Buddha's era too,  who knows them now, they don't have guts to speak the truth as it is. Society can tolerate a spiritual teacher who speaks according to traditions of society. No society, no establishment can accept an authentic master.

I've done decades of ego removal and I have tried in recent years to take that to the personality level, it seems to me from my experience, that the personality is not removable.

Personality removal is very difficult and arduous but not impossible. With spiritual growth your personality changes, if it is not changing, how can there be any spiritual growth when you are the same person ?

It is not only about the duration, intensity of your efforts, your total commitment is important.

Real challenge is to adjust in society with changing personality.
