I've yet to have anyone convince me Schopenhauer's aren't the final words on the matter: 'You can do what you want, but you can't want what you want.' That is to say, what ever you do, you have to want it first. Even the phrase 'free will' is an oxymoron. If it's free, then it can't be bound, and if it's willed, then it's bound by will. However, Spinoza, a rigorous determinist if there ever was one, found good use for the phrase by seeing it in a different light: Free will does not imply the ability to transcend causality, but rather, that your actions are free in the sense that they are determined by inner causes, rather than exterior ones.

So, free will exists if you see it as being free to follow your own will. This will is of course, in the final analysis, influenced by events external to yourself, but what matters is that your will is free if you experience no conflict between your desires and what you end up doing. However, if you see free will as being metaphysically able to choose between several different, equally possible futures, then you've got a lot of explaining to do, and I can't see anyone getting past Schopenhauer's QED.
