38 posts in this topic

Damn, I had been eating a lot of that chocolate for years.

Thanks for posting. That's pretty important data.

Take a urine test if you have strange illnesses.

Aw, not Lily's. Good find.

Well, now I'll know where the lead and cadmium came from if I do a test.

Describe a thought.

I plan to eat a 100g bar of Dark Chocolate (or some other chocolate) once a week.

Is that still unhealthy?

I’m also 26 years old and have been eating Lindt dark chocolate for years, haha.

I’ve had so much heavy metal and toxic exposure since I was a kid that it’s become a parody at this point.

Yep, thanks for sharing on the blog also!

I've been eating Lindt 85% in ungodly amounts the last year :D

Its the mild one but still think the lead poisoning will be similar/same to the other one.

Knew about cadmium already.

There are several ways to get it down. Volcanic soil is bad, so plants from as far away as possible to volcanos is best. Then the PH of the soil in which the cocoa tree is planted plays a big role in the amount of cadmium absorbed in the bean.

Unfortunately brands like Lindt aren't really transparent about where they source from.

Anyone knows where to get Mast chocolate in Europe, seems like they closed their business in London?

Do those heavy metals come from cocoa powder? I drink at least one cup of cocoa every day. :/

Basically any food in powder form is a toxic chemical dump. The more they can grind it up, the less you can tell how low quality it was to begin with, which is perfect for biz.

I can't believe even Tony's Chocolonely appeared on that report :o god, with all the work they put into B corp certification, ethical farming, prevention of child labour support, seriously they couldn't run a third party report?!!!

interesting, never heard about this perspective. Certainly makes sense considering all heavy metals are naturally made deep underground through volcanic action, pressure & heat.

I doubt it's that. More like toxic pesticides and polluted sources of water to keep prices low.

A volcano is not gonna have heavy metals around it.

I think leo is right on that. For example in Ghana there is a lot of illegal gold mines and some of their waste products are Pb, Cd and mercury. there are also huge scrap yards in were old electronics from around the world end up and the people there burn them down to extract cupper and other metals and all that goes down into the soil and the ground water supply. Also some of it pollutes the air and comes down with the rain. I guess  that's kind of karma for us.

Additionally there is so much other pollution. Lot's of people there don't even have sewing so it goes in the ditch in front of the houses and sinks into the ground water.

xD

Seriously though, I heard from Michael Greger that if the matcha is sourced from China, it likely is contaminated with lead.
