A case against business owners when they look down on those with 9-5s

1 post in this topic

First off, I’ve got nothing against owning a business. I worked on one myself as a realtor at one point. What I have a problem with is when business owners think they’re the hustlers and don’t have to depend on anyone “unlike those 9-5 slaving plebes.” Reality has showed/taught me something else. Everyone is hustling to some extent, everyone is an employee to some extent. As a realtor I was taking calls on vacation with family, while bragging about how I make my own schedule-it was a sad reality. I used to be one of those running to every opportunity that meant making money with my eyes closed such as pyramid MLM schemes, etc. In truth, the more you make, the more you spend. You can still live commission check to commission check as a realtor. You can still just barely get by with a business when your margins are only just a bit higher than your expenses. When the pandemic hit, both businesses and employees took a hit. You read all these success/motivation books and it’s all just about how to cope at the end of the day.

I just think it’s silly for entrepreneurs to think they’re a cut above an employee. I had all these friends looking down on those working 9-5 while they themselves had no health insurance. You’re posting an overly inflated version of your success on social media without ever posting the dark side of it all. These people are putting up a facade, they’re no different than someone working at Wal-Mart thinking they’re not expendable.
