No self-referential thoughts = higher functionality; adolescence vs. adulthood

Please explain how there is passive aggression or games in this thread.  All I see is advocacy for the mentally ill and for autism and for those who are different than the rest of us.  Please don't just throw claims without support in this 'bro' culture that is this forum.

What's with all the games here? :(

Life is a game, a story, and it can take on infinite versions and perspectives.

You are a selfless LACK OF APPEARANCE, that CONSTRUCTS AN APPEARANCE. But that appearance can disappear and reappear and we call that change, we call it time, we call it space, we call it distance, we call distinctness, we call it other. But notice...this appearance, is a SELF. A SELF IS A CONSTRUCTION!!!

So if you want to know the TRUTH OF THE CONSTRUCTION. Just deconstruct the construction!!!! No point in playing these mind games!!! No point in creating needless complexity!!! The truth of what you are is a BLANK!!!! A selfless awareness....then that means there is NO OTHER, and everything you have ever perceived was JUST AN APPEARANCE, A MIRAGE, AN ILLUSION, IMAGINARY.

Everything that appears....appears out of a lack of appearance/void/no-thing, non-sense (can't be sensed because there is nothing to sense). That is what you are, and what arises...is made of that. So nonexistence, arises/creates existence. And thus everything is solved.

Self reference thoughts help with therapy especially for autistic patients since they rarely self reflect and seem to have a deficiency when it comes to self reference, self awareness and self reflection. The more they're encouraged to interact in a me me me manner, the better and I know this, by interacting with other autism patients since I suffer autism as well.

So that's not encouraging to say that self referential thinking is not functional since it's very helpful for mentally ill people.

Rumination is different from this. It means being obsessed with the same thought or event and never getting out of it, it's very repetitive and causes obsession and fatigue and definitely affects functionality. Ruminating is a prominent feature of bipolar disorder and its very debilitating.

Both are different things.

One is useful the other is not.

I'll end it here

Like @Nilsi, you got hung up on the word "self-referential thinking" from the title. I guess I'm sorry that the title of the thread couldn't capture all of the nuances of the topics discussed -_-

Firstly, I think the label of "self-referential thinking" could be misleading. It's better to talk about neural correlates:

When you're problem-solving, you're primarily using the task-positive network. "Deliberately reflecting on yourself for whatever purpose" sounds like problem-solving to me. On the other hand, when you're not doing any deep problem-solving, most people primarily switch to the task-negative network (i.e. compulsively thinking I/me/my thoughts). Nobody is advocating for eliminating the episodic memory, only for reducing prolonged stays in the task-negative network.

Therapy is a guided problem-solving session. Rumination, while it involves recalling unresolved problems, is not problem-solving, because there is no work being done, no progress being made. As I've established earlier, rumination makes up the majority of self-referential thinking. Therefore, to refer to self-referential thinking as something dysfunctional is not completely unwarranted, but yes, it can be misleading from a more granular perspective.

I'm ruminating, with some rum, reading Rumi poems till I'm drunk in my divine bliss, wonder why this thread is still passive aggressive even today, mumbling to myself 'Why hate myself for my own self referential thoughts I'm having?'.

Contemplating, all this and that hating, in contempt of tempting wickedness, the temperature of this rose rose up, tempting explaining why templating this is too complicated.

“Did you ever say Yes to a single joy? O my friends, then you said Yes to all woe as well. All things are chained and entwined together, all things are in love; if ever you wanted one moment twice, if ever you said: ‘You please me, happiness! Abide, moment!’ then you wanted everything to return!” - Friedrich Nietzsche

I have those sober though, when I'm on the deep end of rhyming every word to every thought, bar none psychedelics or spiritual techniques.

@Carl-Richard

It's like conscious streaming, or writing down your judgment labelling of others in a journal, except I freestyle rap them out.

@Carl-Richard you have been banned for 2 days and told to do community service in a psych ward in these 2 days. :D(just joking)

Nonsensical joke, don't mind.
