I'm just one person out of billions of people so why even have a life purpose?

41 posts in this topic

I feel like life is pointless because I'm just one person out of billions of people. Like if I'm just one person then why should I try to have a life purpose? If my life really doesn't matter that much why should I even try to find a purpose in life.

It just feels like all of this really doesn't matter because the world will go on without me and any one person so I don't understand the point of trying. I don't understand the point of having a life purpose because even if I do I'm still just one person.

I just feel like this doesn't matter at all because I'm just one person and even if I have a life purpose it won't change that fact.

There’s only one life you get to experience now regardless of how many other people there are. A life purpose can benefit your own experience greatly.

Often a counter argument for these threads is...

What's the alternative?

I understand that some people (including myself) are free souls here, we're not particularly built for this age of capitalism and work. In other words we're ahead of our time.

If society was advanced enough we would be hopping from galaxy to galaxy.

Not to add to your Nihilism but you gotta work with what you have, it's just the way it is. In this case that means motivating yourself to spend your paid time meaningfully instead of wasting it.

What does the # of people have to do with anything lol, there are probably quadrillions of stars out there, none of them are like... man what's to point of burning away if everyone else is just burning as well.

You shouldn’t have a life purpose. You should continue on for the rest of your life being the mopey little turkey that you are. Your life doesn’t matter and everything is meaningless so you shouldn’t do a god damn thing but sit around and wait to die.

Hows that feel?

The game of survival cannot be won.

Yes, even though you are a single person ; an individual...

The effect you have on the world is more than you can ever imagine.

You have it completely backwards.

You can change a person's life with just a few words.

You can change her person's life with a simple glance.

The effect you are constantly having on the world is more than you can ever imagine.

Now if you're intentional about it... And develop a life purpose as you say... Then the effect you have on the world can be even more powerful because you are going about it in a disciplined and proactive way.

Sorry you feel the way you do, but my friend do not lie to yourself, you have a massive effect on the world, just right now as you are without a life purpose.

There were and there are many individuals who has changed and who are changing the world right now, just by living up to their LP. But here is the thing: none of those people who significantly changed the world did it alone. They were living in a societal structure that provided them the necessary people and tools and circumstances so that they could excel at whatever they wanted to do. Every prior invention and inventor every prior scientific research and researcher contributed to everyone elses success in one way or another.

You can't totally decouple people from their environment, from their parents, from their teachers, from their relationships, from their friends and from other past and present people. All of that have and had an impact on their persona and on their doom and or on their success. Thats why its important not to dismiss any impact that even a seemingly insignificant individual can cause.

Even if you are not the person who will have the largest impact on the world, you need to realize that the world and our society is an infinitely interconnected web and everyone has an effect on everything and everyone else. If one node changes that has an effect on every other points and that can alone cause a significant change. Think about the butterfly effect and think about the fact that whether you want to do it intentionally or not you have an impact on the world that eventually riddles down everywhere.

Having an LP doesn't necessarily mean you have to aim for an enormous goal, just be conscious and mindful of whatever you are doing, and be conscious of the causes how your presence and work contributes to society.

It matters to you, because it's your life.

Life purpose is not mainly about changing the world. It's mainly about elevating the quality of your life, by aligning yourself with your most elevated self. The world will automatically become a better place the more you align with your purpose and your life quality rises.

This objection you're having here is coming either from a procrastination defense mechanism/laziness, or from depression and a generally low vibrational state. If you're depressed, look into shadow work and healing first before you start searching for your life purpose. If you're being lazy then just stop being lazy and move your ass and do it.

Foolish until proven other-wise ;)

Life purpose is an existential argument. There is no fundamental purpose for anything.

You need one for yourself. For motivation and a compass to move forward within life.

@NightHawkBuzz The number of people on the planet is completely irrelevant to your life purpose. Your life is just as meaningful whether there are 10 people or 10 billion.

Precisely wrong. You are the one and only to ever exist.

Try not to squander it on meaningless escapism!

It's understandable to feel small or insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but it's important to remember that every person's life has value and meaning, regardless of how many other people there are in the world. Having a sense of purpose can give your life direction, focus, and meaning, and can help you to feel more fulfilled and satisfied with your life. It can also give you a sense of connection to others, as your actions and choices can have an impact on the people around you and the world in general. Ultimately, the purpose of your life is something that only you can decide, and it can change and evolve over time as you grow and learn. It's important to take the time to think about what is most meaningful and fulfilling to you, and to pursue those things in your life.

For yourself and for others.

Having a life purpose is like a cheat code in life. It will make everything much easier and more enjoyable.

To me, that's not the best counter argument to convince or persuade a Nihilist, or if that's not the specific goal, the other is that isn't sufficient to deconstructing their argument for a life that's pointless or meaningless, by expecting one question to upend their entire argument, because you can ask 'What's the alternative?' and I can also retort back 'well, what's NOT the alternative?', see?

Good you understand some people here are 'free souls' or maybe 'free spirited', but that's insufficient to argue back the Nihilist because you're assuming that he's also as much of a 'free soul' as you are, yet he also could be the opposite, a 'trapped soul'. Also, using the band wagon and claiming 'WE'RE not particularly built for this age of capitalism and work' is insufficient as well, because not only did you assume he's akin/identical to you, but you then made the additional abstraction to include this person into your band wagon, of 'free souls', 'not particularly built for capitalism and work'. Well, if that's the case, then what is he, or you to be precise, particularly built for? Communism? Progressivism? Socialism? Liberalism? Anarchism? Libertarianism? Centrism? Modernism? Conservatism? Traditionalism? Nationalism? Also, if not built for work, then built for what? To not work? To do nothing? To be the cart pulled by horses?

'If society was advanced enough we would be hoping from galaxy to galaxy'. Is an assertion based more on fantasy, and adds little to counter this Nihilist's argument.

'Not to add to your Nihilism but you gotta work with what you have, it's just the way it is.' 'In this case that means motivating yourself to spend your paid time meaningfully instead of wasting it.'. These two statements actually add to the Nihilists argument, the first statement affirms his case and the second bolsters his point, because actually he's deriving meaning already from identifying as a Nihilist, and believing in a worldview and meta framing of life as meaningless. The Nihilist actually derives meaning from the negative meaning his mind generates, and will take your first statement as true because he's life is already, assumingly, shitty, low and miserable, so yes he'd agree this is what he has to work with already, a shitty meaningless life that is the way it is. He'll also take your second statement as 'Exactly! This is what motivates me, this story of my life and life itself as meaningless in comparison to billions of others lives, and I get to feel all the negativity, which is better than nothing. Of course this is meaningful!'. In this way, you've bolstered his story up and even made him feel more secure and empowered in his position.

'What does the # of people have to do with anything lol, there are probably quadrillions of stars out there, none of them are like... man what's to point of burning away if everyone else is just burning as well.' The # of people actually have something to do with his argument for being Nihilistic, from those who are wealthy and rich and secure in their lives, to those dating more successfully than him, to those who are working and managing under capitalism. This person has a list in his head, probably a short list of people in real life or in social media or movies he can point to and say 'This is why I'm Nihilistic! LOOK! That person's successful, and look there! That person life still is normal! WHY IS MY LIFE MEANINGLESS, WHEN ALL OF THOSE PEOPLE ACT MEANINGFULLY?!' He'll already have this in his mind. Also your thought about the stars to somehow compare them as analogous to him or the people around him or even human beings is just too asymmetrical to use, because they're STARS, CELESTIAL OBJECTS, BEING STARS, and are not human beings, being human, suffering this story of Nihilism. They're just out there, as stars.

It is about your choice to how you want to live your life. It is purported that to have a grand purpose that you work towards every day, one that matters a great deal to YOU, will bring you immense amounts of joy. Now if you want to live a life of great joy, I can only suggest that this is an avenue that you check out.

I can relate the feeling from which I've grown past. So, I'll ask you these questions:

What emotions do you like? Do you like to feel lazy, depressed, bored, Apathy? Or guilt, shame, lose, sadness, grief? Or Worry, nervousness, insecurity, terror, fear? Would you like instead to feel lust, cravings, pleasure, greed, envy? Maybe some anger, annoyance, arrogance, disgust? How about feelings of pride, feeling icy, cold, judgmental, superiority, gloat? Or would you rather feel higher levels of emotions like courage, confidence, creativity, happiness? Love, joy, feelings of glowing? Peace, fluidity, authenticity, grounded serenity? These are emotions possible to feel as a whole human being.

Or, would you rather feel nothing, as nothing as the world or billions of people, in your dirty lenses, feel meaninglessness? Feel nothing, as dead and robotic as metal? Feeling sorry for existing as a human being? Not much you can really do, if you ask me, other than try to become more whole and complete than you currently are, a fragmented human being.

Maybe, the way you're thinking about yourself, others and life and reality, your philosophy, in your meta programming, needs to be more in 1st person than 3rd person? NLP is what I'm talking about BTW. Maybe it's worth doing inner checks in your mind for how you visualize yourself, others and the world and see if there's something in your mental representations that need some changing up.
