Where does self-discipline come from ?

Like what is the biology or brain chemistry or whatever that makes self discipline possible ? Do non-human animals have it too ? A lot of people attribute success and free will to discipline, but where does self-discipline comes from exactly in the body ?

It comes from a well adjusted brain. 

It is genetic as well as based on upbringing. 

It also needs a shit ton of self love. 

You won't be disciplined if you don't love yourself enough.. 

Most well disciplined people are good at differentiating emotion from logic and situation from reaction. 

To develop self discipline you need 

  • A non interfering environment 
  • Self control 
  • Self confidence 
  • Self awareness 
  • Self love
  • Ambition
  • Focus
  • Consistency 
  • Determination

@Tyler Robinson what do you mean by a “well adjusted” brain? Is it a skill that you develop same thing as getting good with women for example ?

@Majed Habits take time to build and stick, and they also take time to dissolve and go away. Whatever you keep doing regularly will turn into a habit after a certain period of time. Precisely, 66 days (on average, of course). Once it becomes a habit, the re-wiring of your neural connections will settle, and the habit will become effortless. But until then you will have to exercise some will power in order to make it stick. The brain does not distinguish between good habits and bad habits. Whatever you input, it will then output after a period of time.

According to Peterson (2016), conscientiousness is correlated with a high sensitivity to guilt. When a disciplined person does something they know they should not be doing, the experience more guilt than a normal person. This causes them to pursue things that will avoid the feeling of guilt. So disciplined people feel guilt less often but more intensely.

If you want to be a more disciplined person, you can do so by basically acting like a disciplined person would. So this would be things like: keeping your living space clean and neat, showing up to things on time, doing certain activities at regular intervals, making and following a schedule. It has actually been shown that your conscientiousness can be increased involuntarily if you are forced to do some kind of task at regular intervals for an extended period of time.

Self discipline is being the master of your own body, instead of being the slave of your own body.

If you are a slave of your own body with all of its primitive desires, you are at the whim or your animal lower self.

Self discipline at its core is being the master of your sexual desires instead of being a slave to it. Sex is the trunk of the animal ego. That is why sex is such a central topic in religions. That is what no-fap is really about. No-fap is the secular answer to age old wisdom which a lot of people don't understand.

It's basically mainly a question of habits / dumb animal biology.

If you do a lot of fun things that are useless, your dumb brain will associate it with being useful. Remember -> your animal part IS NOT INTERESTED IN SURVIVAL. IT IS INTERESTED ONLY IN FOLLOWING THE DOPAMINE HITS. 

If you want to be productive / disciplined you have to cut out things that are too fun without a purpose. Like YouTube, video games, chatting with friends. You can still keep something, like masturbation - since that's pretty harmless.

Then your dumb animal brain will go down to the next things that can produce dopamine eg. Building your business or studying or both.

And that's when building your business or studying BECOMES FUN.

Good habits are kind off an on / off switch.

Mindset wise it's a question off "do I want a reward now that will sacrifice my future goals, or are my goals good enough to sacrifice SOME pleasure (video games, YouTube etc - no sexual sacrifices need to be made) so that I can have it later (because it will be much more fulfilling -> pleasurable than any dumb, free, short term thing you can do).

 

Edit: it might be beneficial to do a short term water fast (3 - 5 days), because it's a quick switch button. If you do only positive stuff during this time, IT WILL AUTOMATICALLY BECOME FUN!
