Are there leftist libertarians ?

7 posts in this topic

I have come across the idea that people's political outlooks can be described by two independent dimensions. A left-right axis and a libertarian-authoritarian axis.

But is it a good model ?  Are all four quadrants populated ? Or is leftism inherently authoritarian ?Is there a libertarian left ?

To my understanding Leftism first and foremost wants the government to redistribute income (and/or pay for free/cheap public services).
Libertarianism amounts to seeking freedom from government intervention (where possible).
Therefore, in my opinion, there is rather limited scope for leftist libertarianism.but it exists .

Am I correct ?

Sorry for my poor understanding of these issues . I'm still a noob in politics ?

As silly as it sounds, yes.

Sometimes Noam Chomsky and Vaush refer to themselves as left libertarians or even anarchists.

I think In general, left-wing politics focuses on the group, while right-wing politics focuses on the individual. There is much more to left-wing and right-wing politics than that, of course, but I think it's true, as far as it goes. Am I correct?

I don't see that libertarianism and authoritarianism are even 'opposites'. And libertarianism, as we know, focusses strongly on the individual, as right-wing politics also does.

In my impression, when anarchy arises, it is rather the lower-ranking members who will seek to coagulate around a new leader and propel him to the forefront.

BTW Leo.. what books do you suggest to read for beginners In politics to build a good political foundational understanding?

Thanks ?

Ooofff! Ya biffed it! Right wing arguments based on the bipartisanship of the sexes does not make sense and may not be politically correct.

I see a lot of absolutism in the article you posted when it comes to defining what libertarians are and what leftist are .

The relativism is nesscary.

Although, I have witnessed some truth to your article. The political compass does not yet share perspective to corporation being anything but leftist libertarian. For example..The argument for power in the Ukraine, however, has political direction witch is sympathetic of the seige warfare of the leftist libertarians. The comparison to leftist libertarians I like to use for balancing compass directions is ISIS of Syria during the processes of lamentation and the refection of ISIS. Both of these processes are strategies of exploitation used by selective services.

Being collectivist doesn't say anything about if you are on the right or the left. Nationalism is collectivist in a sense and is a right winged ideology. Many right winged ideologies are about being devoted to the group becuase that is what you are supposed to do and that is pretty darn collectivist if you ask me.

Generally speking the right is about tradition, order etc. And left winged is about liberation, freedom and change. The left can be authoritarian and so can the right. We have a very wierd view today on what the left is and what the right is. People are calling themselves right winged just because they disagree with gender politics and don't agree with the crazy self defined socialists and communists, like bruh? There are plenty of left winged people that disagrees with the modern left winged fiasco, me included. The original defintion of right and left is that the left winged seeks change while the right seeks to conserve. Extreme left winged is revolutionary and extreme right winged is reactionary.

They are 100% opposites and as I mentioned above, right winged does not mean individuality.

You definition of anarchy is also off. The idea of communism is that the so called "Elite" should lead the working/lower class on a revolution(Like you described here, people gathering under one leader).  However an anarchist or syndicalist  would say "Fuck the elite, the workingclass leads their own revolution independent from any athoritarian power". Anarchists groups don't have any leaders, they might have some prominent figures, but not leaders and if you ask 10 anarchists on what anarchy is you will get 10 different answers. If you do some research on revolutionary anarchist groups they operate as a unit without a leader.  Anarchy is not just saying "fuck the state", anarchy is a radicly different way of understanding human nature and looking at the inidividual. Anarchy is hyper-individualistic, but unlike other individualistic ideologies it realises that we have a strong collectivist nature. Education is also an essential part of the anarchist philosophy and it puts emphasis on self mastery. Anarchy is on some level also a reaction against an authoritarian regime.  Anarchy can be a phenomenon, an ideology, a philosophy and many anarchists will say that anarchy is a lifestyle, my boyfriend even consideres anarchy to be something spiritual.
