Doubting The Defense

Hello all - 

I was wondering, in Leo's video about doubting leading to the centric stage of development:

a) are the self-defense mechanisms we need to doubt the Freudian ones (mostly lying, repression, and the associated behaviors)?

b) can anyone explain how this process works on a psychological level? 

c) not really a question, but more of a suggestion: after you've doubted something for a while (belief, false motivation...) try consciously letting it go.
