How to spot hypocrites?

5 posts in this topic

I often bump into hypocrites and it's usually a very frustrating experience.

How can I get better at spotting and screening hypocrites?

Be careful being too demanding in relationships. Relate to the person at the level they are at, not where you need them to be.

I'd say when dealing with deceitfulness or a hypocrite:

  • Be connected to your gut feeling.
  • Observing body language and things that seem incongruent or off.
  • Observing the context of how things are being said.
  • Observing the core beliefs. So a person with more rigid beliefs tends to be a hypocrite.
  • Observing for black and white thinking. Inability to hold dichotomies indicates they will be hypocritical.
  • Keeping a written record of instances with the individual and attach the emotion you feel.
  • Find similar patterns that indicate a hypocrite. Keep an image in your head of these patterns.
  • Ask questions to dig deeper. Watch for defensiveness or defense mechanisms.
  • Observe their actions and see if the words match up.
  • During conflicts or arguments people tend to be most hypocritical to save face. Winning at all costs.  Not about being right or honest. It's not about logic.

Almost everyone is hypocritical, almost everyone employs double standards. Humans are imperfect creatures. We are far better at noticing these faults in others than ourselves, however.
