That’s not Putin’s aim. It’s an unavoidable consequence of his actions. But his goal is to conquer the Donbas and Crimea, and thereby have access to the Black Sea for their navy.

"Not believing your own thoughts, you’re free from the primal desire: the thought that reality should be different than it is. You realise the wordless, the unthinkable. You understand that any mystery is only what you yourself have created. In fact, there’s no mystery. Everything is as clear as day. It’s simple, because there really isn’t anything. There’s only the story appearing now. And not even that.” — Byron Katie

That is exactly his aim! This is a war strategy foremost. 100+ medical facilities bombed in Ukraine is a strategy not a consequence. The better the war goes for Putin, the bigger the target will be, his goal in march was to take over all of Ukraine, things didn't go his way and THEN he said our main goal is Donbas and Crimea.

Many knew that Putin was gradually being pushed into a corner, however, he lowered the threshold for brutality in a way that not many leaders in Europe thought possible.

That is their problem.

Just look at all this as America's Iraq. It makes about as much sense.

That’s a very bad comparison. It was obvious that America had no ambitions of controlling Iraq in any shape or form. Their sole target was Saddam’s regime.

Zelensky was chosen by the Ukrainian people. Targeting him is the same as targeting all of Ukraine’s people.

US had its eyes set on Iraqi oil.

Moreover, Crimea used to be part of Russia. So it makes far more sense than invading Iraq.

Exactly. Most Americans don't are aware of how tyrannical the US was with countries. Latin America for example suffered for decades with internal affairs meddling from the US and exploitation.  In my opinion, France is the only country that has exploited  Latin America more than the US in the last century.

Europe is in a  fast decline, and one of the reasons is because  it can't exploit other parts of the world like it used to do.

Exploiting other countries is a bad strategy these days as it quickly boomerangs. We saw this with the Iraq war, and now we're seeing it with Putin's war.

These days a country does not need to exploit anyone to do well for itself.

The US and Russia both made themselves weaker with frivolous wars.

So why is Europe becoming weaker as time passes by?

There’s a world of difference between extracting resources from a place, and conquering it. One of them is more permanent.

Lol. And Iraq was part of the Turkish empire. So it makes more sense for Turkey to invade and conquer Iraq.

According to who?

What does that claim even mean?

@Leo Gura If Europe invades and conquers (retakes) Africa, will you promise to defend them as much as you are defending Putin right now?

Look at countries like the UK, and their inflation, they didn't recover economically from the pandemic until now. Gdp per capita in western Europe has been stagnated for years. Life conditions especially in countries like Portugal, Spain, and Italy are getting pretty tough. Even Brazil has right now lower inflation than all these countries. They don't have a strong agriculture sector or an industrial one. A lot of their income comes from tourism.

I don't defend Putin's war. I just like to understand it. I support the US sending Ukraine weapons.

Inflation is a problem around the world and is strongly Covid related.

I don't see any fundamental problems in Europe that they cannot solve.

Being brainwashed by anti-propaganda doesn't mean you are any less brainwashed than those who received the initial one

Our task here is to go beyond propaganda and be as unbiased as possible toward all sides

Why this conflict is so large and risks continuing for the foreseeable future is largely due to Putin's misjudgments, like Bush In Iraq but the US would probably not be willing, as Russia is now doing, to throw in another 300,000 soldiers for cannon fodder after just losing (estimated) 50,000+ soldiers.

Most Americans were in favor of the war in Iraq, most Russians probably don't care about Putin's dream of Mother Russia.

Also hard to see that the US would violate as many laws of war as Russia have already done. The brutality of this war is more reminiscent of a civil war in Africa than the Iraq war.

US is not Russia. US politics are much more sensitive to public opinion.

Most Russians support Putin.

Because Russia is much less developed than the US. Of course the Russian military is much less professional.

But still, US did some evil stuff in Iraq. War crimes are just part of war.

As I walk on Moscow streets, people's faces reveal they are feeling very meh about this all situation

Everybody is feeling so anxious and mildly or not so mildly depressed, kinda like post war Germany feel to a meaningful degree

I imagine in rural areas it can be quite the opposite though
