Can You Develop Intelligence?

8 posts in this topic

Hi, I know this question covers a wide topic and that intelligence/IQ is suppose to be static depending on genetics. And unless they develop something in the near future we are all stuck with what we have. But you can perform at your peak levels if you lead a healthy life style.

I don't ask this because i worry whether i am dumb or smart, i simply want to know your thoughts on this topic and take your wisdom if you're smart hehe. So thanks responses would be appreciated.

I've personally developed intelligence across a wide array of spaces, including all 9 types of intelligence as outlined by Howard Gardner. I'm a polymath, but it might be said that I didn't start out as one. I was only average in all but linguistic and logic, but now I'm high level in all through focusing on and practicing the fundamental movements of human nature. Things like differentiation and population, inter-connection, flow, compression, multi-dimensionality, etc. while also developing my resiliency towards the forces of nature that limit mental capacity like tunnel-vision, "being blind to your own blindness", internal bias/delusion/unwarranted certainty, shut-down through stress, over-complexity, corruption through reduction into simplicity, and the effects of pressure and drag.

@Mark96 Intelligence is a social construct. How do you measure that?
It is not static, it cannot be. It is a totally manmade invention that doesn't have a real value. Don't waste your time with it.
You either are aware of things, or you're not. It is as simple as that.

Martin, I mean no disrespect, but the above is an example of a corruption through reduction into simplicity and it makes you less likely to expand your intelligence.

Why? Because awareness is only one facet of learning, it is far from the only thing we need to be involved with and it is dependent on other things for it's expansion. Things like sensitivity, differentiation, multi-dimensionality, depth, population of diversity, and traction. Then there is the actual application of intelligence, which involves action and different levels of internalization which affects the mind-body inter-connection and the eventual expression of whatever it is we've learned.

Awareness alone is not enough and a binary statement of you are either aware or not, disregards all the different degrees of difference in our state of awareness about a thing and shrouds or corrupts further avenues of expansion. It creates a dead-end when a person internalizes or accepts the conclusion you put forth as an accurate representation of reality.

You're absolutely right, my bad I didn't express myself correctly.
When I say you either are aware or are not aware, I don't mean it in a simplistic manner.
You can be aware of quantum mechanics, you can be aware of quantum mechanics in depth, or on a surface level. You can expand this awareness by integrating more knowledge into your view of reality.
But the whole concept of intelligence just doesn't check out. The mainstream term intelligence suggests that you either are good at Maths or you're not. That is just simply not true, you have the capacity to be good at Maths, and you either fulfill it or not. Some capacities are for some people much easier to fulfill than others, and that's it.
The problem is that it is not quantifiable, the whole idea of measuring IQ off of a standardized test is complete utter nonsense, and only creates space for more insecurity and judgement.
What does someone with "higher intelligence" look like?
If "you" are intelligent, which you do you mean? The You that you present to your parents, or the you that you present to your peers?

I can show you a practical example from my own life.
In the past I used to play a lot of piano. Sometimes I would just sit at the piano and could not play at all. Even if I wanted to come up with something good, I simply couldn't. Other times, I just sat and played music I didn't know I was capable of creating. It was a beautiful amazing creation of mine and it was flowing effortlessly.
Now on what basis are you going to judge my "musical intelligence"? The first situation or the second situation?
Intelligence IS a cultural concept.
Awareness, creativity and skill are human qualities.

@Salaam Can you give a bit more context , How did you measure that? did you take an administrated intelligence test like before and after?
