@bambi I think you are conflating death of all conscious forms with the vanishing of the ego. I had both many times.

Of course during a God realization, you will not have any ego, but you can loosen the grip of it right now. This loosening will eventually even lead to awakenings, but that needs decades of training. 

The basic definition is this:

Ego is just the identification with thoughts. So when this identification dies, there is just peace and wonder.
