Is anyone sick of lyrics in music?

92 posts in this topic

I'm getting tired of pop music, modern popular music having lyrics all the f* ing time. There are few who just do instrumentals and they all go to game osts or movie osts.

I don't know if anybody is willing to listen to regular music that aren't OSTs that have no lyrics. Bach and Mozart's pieces usually did not have lyrics, which made their music better.

Why are people so addicted to lyrics? I'm not going to go far to say people have abused their hearing sense, but I really get irritated by lyrics. I know listening to poetry with the music can give us more pleasure with our ears, but excessive words can really be painful to me. Why does music have to have words!

Just a reflection of rampant stage Orange values of western society. That and a slow decline of healthy stage blue values

Lol, maybe you should be listening to music with good lyrics as opposed to rubbish.

Also, sounds risk being too meaningless without proper linguistic context.

@AtheisticNonduality What's your definition of good lyric

Lyrics that are actually meaningful and have something to say, some information to give, some story to tell, some world to imagine, some access to truth, some access to the overarching story of all of history, etc.

@Bird Larry sorry if I don't  get it, but I seriously don't understand what the problem is. There are lots of genres and creators out there. And they are all easily accessible  so everyone can find whatever they like. So what am I wrong about  exactly?

Sometimes people want to vent...

You are a selfless LACK OF APPEARANCE, that CONSTRUCTS AN APPEARANCE. But that appearance can disappear and reappear and we call that change, we call it time, we call it space, we call it distance, we call distinctness, we call it other. But notice...this appearance, is a SELF. A SELF IS A CONSTRUCTION!!!

So if you want to know the TRUTH OF THE CONSTRUCTION. Just deconstruct the construction!!!! No point in playing these mind games!!! No point in creating needless complexity!!! The truth of what you are is a BLANK!!!! A selfless awareness....then that means there is NO OTHER, and everything you have ever perceived was JUST AN APPEARANCE, A MIRAGE, AN ILLUSION, IMAGINARY.

Everything that appears....appears out of a lack of appearance/void/no-thing, non-sense (can't be sensed because there is nothing to sense). That is what you are, and what arises...is made of that. So nonexistence, arises/creates existence. And thus everything is solved.

@Bittu haha

I've got a bit depressed constantly listening to game or movie OSTs. I didn't want to listen to Mozart or Bach because if I kept listening to them, I felt like I was getting out of touch by society.

Some MFs like listening to club music, in which I have no respect at all. haha. Not that I don't like some of them.

Pop music in Korea, even in America just seems mostly dull to me. I don't know any instrumental music aside of electro music that actually intrigues me, which is sad. Electro music fulfills me only 80%. I need 100% satisfaction. Where can I get it.

Simple....create it. Provide the music you believe is missing.

There's a lot of great contemporary dance music and ambient music without lyrics. Of course Rock, Hip-Hop, Pop etc. will have lyrics, that's kind of the point of it.

“Did you ever say Yes to a single joy? O my friends, then you said Yes to all woe as well. All things are chained and entwined together, all things are in love; if ever you wanted one moment twice, if ever you said: ‘You please me, happiness! Abide, moment!’ then you wanted everything to return!” - Friedrich Nietzsche

Because lyrics are a sub set of music as well, and what you typically get when you have both linguistic and musical intelligence working together, to create meaningful arrangement of sounds. Although yes, the key part here is meaningful arrangement of sounds, which most pop culture nowadays kinda miss, unfortunately we have gone deaf tone to both meaningful arrangement of music instruments and lyrics, with the over use of techno and electro modified voices and instruments.

However, there are a few very talented artists who can combine music and lyrics meaningfully, just check out Eminem.

This is some of the best musicianship I have heard, EVER. I cannot recommend this album highly enough. If there is such a thing as TIER 2 music - this is it xD

If you're looking for more great contemporary lyricless music check out Olafur Arnalds, Jon Hopkins, Ben Böhmer, David August, Max Richter - all great artists.

What about meaningless lyrics with made up words?

But yeah, I generally couldn't care less about lyrics.

It just opens up the medium of music to those who can't understand/appreciate musicality.  I know people for whom melody/harmony/rhythm/scale/etc. mean nothing, and all they enjoy is the lyrics.  But at that point it's literally just poetry and idgaf about that.

I don't pay attention to the meaning of the lyrics but I know that most of my favorite songs would be reduced to trash if you simply got rid of the lyrics.
