The things a human depends on how good feedback from the task

If the body sees that self-help makes your life "gooder" then it will continue doing it

The things you do the most are the things that give you the most "good emotions"

It's called enthusiasm. 

But sometimes we do things for others even if it means taking pains.

What @BipolarGrowth meant was that usually the best long-term emotions are also hard in a sense that you must put yourself into the equation. Only doing hard things which are stupid or which won't lead you where you actually want to go of course is not suggested. Doing hard things in general is adviced, because it is what builds your mindset. Hope that this made more sense.
