I have read that the subconscious mind develops in childhood around the ages between six and eleven. Whatever a child learns during this period has a profound impact on the perceptions and mentality of the person as an adult. 

I think both are intertwined. The external affects the internal and vice-versa. The major difference obviously lies in the control mechanism. The internal can be controlled to a limited extent whereas there is no control on the environmental conditions. 

Our upbringing has a huge impact on our perceptions and worldview.
