Ego Is Coming Back..

14 posts in this topic

I forgot to meditate for a day, and every since, my ego has been steadily coming back... It's gotten so bad to the point to where I can't really go into deep meditation anymore. I just get really anxious for no apparent reason, and end up stopping. I personally think that it's just my ego. Any advice on how to deal with ego coming back very strong?

@ExtraAwesome Dont worry my friend, the ego will try to reinforce itself over and over again, just keep going, eventually the power of awareness will prevail.

@ExtraAwesome sounds like its not. What i mean is you created 2 egos and there now fighting each other.

Just try to recognize the ego. In a sense, apart from putting thoughts in your head it has 0 power over you.

It comes down to you paying attention to it and cherishing it. ( note: supressing/tryimg to ignore, is a extreme version of attention.)

Your ego was never gone, my friend. YOU = EGO completely the same. There is no difference AT ALL between what happens for you individually and what we call ego. Please don't make that distinction, you'll trick yourself with it and say "Ohh, this is good because it comes from a deeper place" or "Ohh, this is bad because it comes from ego".

When you have enlightenment experiences you'll instantly recognize that this is not in the same "dimension" as your ego operates in, that's why it can't be described in ego terms. It's kinda like trying to express the integrity of rational numbers with natural numbers alone. It's not possible.

Also, there's nothing inherently bad about YOU = EGO. Don't forget that. Don't make an enemy with yourself, just watch. That's enough. Be interested and see what comes up. The ego has its purpose and you won't even get rid of it when you are enlightened, it just finds a better place to chill. It'll die many deaths until then and rebuild in a more complex fashion, but it'll always be YOU = EGO and that's totally fine.

If negativity, anxiety, anger comes over you (what it will do many times in the purification process) there's not much you can do. Just let it kill the side of itself, that needs to be killed so that it can grow from it. It'll be painful, you'll try anything to make it go away and it won't and at some point you'll feel just good relieved and have grown tremendously. Man up, and go through it. You'll learn how to deal with it in the process.

They want reality, so I give 'em a fatal dosage.

I've heard & read Eckhart Tolle say that ego diminishes as you become more & more conscious of it. Ego has big troubles under the light of awareness. I'm thinking that a road to awakening without the constant setbacks & challenges isn't what most folks wil experience. I've heard Leo say basically that if travelling this path was all easy and straight-forward and intuitive, we'd all be enlightened!

I imagine that if you were making progress before this interuption in your 'connection', that even your anxiety is a form of awareness of the ego and will continue to diminish unconscious ways of living!

@ExtraAwesome What is witnessing the ego that is coming back?

Ask, and see. That's all you need to do actually.

If you worry, get angry, get sad etc. its just your ego making different faces. Its a one man act. There is a watcher of the act, thats all.

Love it. Self-enquiry is there to be USED!

If I will remember one thing from all the Rupert Spira videos I've watched it will be this:

Whenever some thought comes up, ask yourself,  on who's behalf is this thought arising.

After investigating one might come to the conclusion that it is coming from the limited self, not the limitless consciousness that you are. So you acknowledge and move on.

Investigate and observe your Ego as if it is a rare breed of butterflies - because it is, a very rare one <3 Don't make it into a problem

the notion of trying to get rid of the ego entirely might be leading in the wrong direction.

just make peace with the ego and try to see it for what it is:

a specialized tool that enables us to get around and interact in this particular domain of reality with its inherent set of patterns and parameters.

No more no less.

@ExtraAwesome The ego was not gone. The dance is, if the ego coming, your practices are leaving.

Walk Disney illustrated this well.

You can be the seven dwarves, or you can be Snow White.

@ExtraAwesome

Ive had similar bouts with the ego in the past. A few thoughts to share:

- First I'd say: Congratulate yourself for even being aware of this struggle and for persisting with the practice. Do not undervalue this - it is a huge accomplishment!! :) This, on its own, puts you in a very small % of the population, most of who live each day completely unconscious.

- During practice, try to recognize that its your mind that is slapping labels on experience (i.e. this sensation is "unpleasant" and is called "anxiety"). Try to flatten all sensations in the moment as just raw sensations, including thoughts, and surrender to the fact that this concept of "you" has no control over them. I've found in the past when I'm able to truly surrender to this, the monkey chatter begins to quiet.
