Posthumous corruption?

4 posts in this topic

It's common for a creator's legacy to change after their death, and the change commonly will alter what work or service that came before, and be co-opted by other egoes.

First example, look at the recent death of Kentaru Miura. For those of you who don't know and don't read manga, he's a seinin mangaka who created Berserk, a mature rated comic series with mature themes like death, Nihilism, existentialism, cosmosim(the idea of cosmic horror, basically hell raiser). Also contains graphic violence and dark fantasy settings. Very stunning art work for a monthly release and fantastiv story. However, after his passing, the industry he works for, and the promoters and marketers took advantage of the opportunity to make bigger sales. Even his team he hired tk work for him decided to continue his work, which isn't uncommon in the world of manga to do when a creator passes, wither the series is dropped kr is continued later. However, related social media outlets keep on marketing and hyping the series, trying to milk the cow for what it's worth. Yes, a bit harsh from me, but I love the series and the deep themes despite the violence, and seeing how corruption is slowly changing the series is not a nice feeling

Whqt are your thoughts on posthumous corruption? Post also your examples of such a thing happening in society, like wolf of walstreet types that also take over business, aka hostile business takeovers and such.

I know that when a creator dies, whatever work he/she leaves behind wouldn't matter to the founder, but that work will go on to impact the world in some way, and sometimes your creation will end up getting corrupted. I don't see a way to mitigate this type of corruption. Do you?

Not really. There are ways to mitigate of course, but practically speaking I think it's a losing battle, a lot of wasted energy that can't really pay off in the end. Fact remains that people will find endless ways to make a mockery, and there is no way to foresee them all. More than that, it is subject to forces completely beyond your or anyone else's control. In a word, God.

Hence "act, but do not reflect on the fruit of the act."

Cheers

Yeah, easier said than done, I've got many manuscripts of past story outlines, and many rough drafts of drawings, and other rough drafts of other past passions in my life, half constructed because back then it was hobbies and interests to me. I still have some resistance to trying to publish a story, or a drawing, to their prospective industry fields because I'm still a bit indecisive with where my ideal career is, even though I know the direction I don't know the specifics yet. Some day I'm just gonna post and will myself to not care about other's opinions. I might even consider having a secret identity and just post so, just in case my work becomes corrupted I'll have zero connection to it later in life.
