Some insight about music history:

Meshuggah took the rhythmically and technically precise guitar picking techniques of 80s thrash metal (distorted palm muting), distilled them to their essence, and perfected them over the course of a decade, from the 90s to the 00s. And of course, it wouldn't be possible without Tomas Haake's inhuman drumming.

@Carl-Richard have you looked into the connection between music and the brain?

I have heard positive things about it.

@Carl-Richard yup. Music can help heal mental disorders. I have to do more research on this area. The mechanism of how this comes about isn't exactly clear. But it definitely helps to rewire the brain.

Two songs that encapsulate the historical transition from Thrash Metal to "Djent":

1995:

1998:

Since I grew up on Thrash Metal just like these guys (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera, etc.), I had the idea of going back and experiencing their discography from start to finish, so that I can track their progression from that more familiar style to their current more progressive style. I thought about doing this because I've actually had problems getting the point of their style, all until very recently. I also just found out that the lead guitarist Fredrik Thordendal is highly inspired by Allan Holdsworth, and now his guitar soloing style makes much more sense as well. Generally speaking, this little adventure of mine has raised my respect for the band to a completely new level. What I used to perceive as lazy gimmickry turns out to be absolute technical mastery and stylistic sophistication fed through an innovative vision. So yeah, if you have problems getting the point with some piece of music, track their musical inspirations down to their most familiar root and go from there. It's so worth it. 10/10

This is such a beautiful song and a beautiful moment for Mikael as a musician considering he used to not be comfortable with singing.

Probably the most harmonically and melodically complex song I've heard in a while.

I used to think this new wave of prog metal bands were a bit recycled and lacking in style, but this might've changed my mind:

According to Harrison in the "In Absentia" documentary, this Porcupine Tree song was inspired by Meshuggah, which I think is fucking cool:

Quote from Fredrik Thordendal's "Sol Niger Within":

Quote

I Sing In Colors

My Mother Is God
My Father Is God
My Brothers
My Sisters
All Are God

God To The Right
God To The Left
God Overhead

Christ
Encounter Of The Fourth Kind

It's a pretty cringe spoken word, but it leads into a jazz fusion orgasm, Holdsworthian solo improvisation (actually on-topic):

9:23

S tier improv is just channelling.

You have to get so good that the process becomes automatic and you don't even consciously know what you're doing.

..like me writing this rn,  idk anything about what you're asking about, or maybe I do, idc.  I rarely talk from my own experience or intellect.  Writing is just such an automatic process I'm sometimes shocked looking back at what I wrote.

I've thought about recording myself every time I sit down to play guitar (I basically spend 90% of the time just improvising over some basic chord progressions that I have on loop) on my shitty laptop webcam like I did on that one guitar cover, and then maybe after a week, I'll find a selection of moments where I enter that state and post it :D The main hurdle is what Gavin Harrison (drummer) once put so eloquently of "mentally undressing", which is harder when you know you're being watched. So my plan is that if I get used to recording every time I sit down, that problem will be solved.
