Is this moral/accepted by any employer?

3 posts in this topic

Is it a wise/moral thing (or would it be a problem) to use my company servers (being an employee I get it for free) to use it for personal things? Like learning other things, let's say I look for another job and I'm learning other job-related stuff? What if I use the servers for streaming movies?

I'm truly sorry if I posted this doubt in the wrong place.

In a smaller company with under 50 employees, you can probably ask the boss and see if they're okay with it.

In a larger company it's not a wise thing to do without asking. And of course it's not moral, you're basically stealing a resource. If you get caught you'll probably be fired, or at least not trusted again for a long time.

It's also a big difference if you're doing it during work time or in off-hours. Asking "Can I host my video game server on company hardware to play with my friends at night" vs "Can I play video games on company time"

In general it's just not a smart thing to even ask. It's easier to use company wifi than to ask to use their servers. Just connect to wifi and stream or do whatever you need to do through your phone.

No, right sub-forum to post topics related to jobs, careers, life purpose.

It's not a smart thing to do. Ideally, I'd keep personal stuff out of businesses and jobs. If you really have to include personal software or stuff in a company space, then something went wrong with how you're managing work and personal things.
