Elon Musk Buys Twitter

By it's nature of being a popular platform that severely constricts how much you can say in one message, it encourages (basically forces) people to be extreme, inflammatory, shocking, and to post clickbait to get attention. Which = revenue if you're a business or media member.

This fundamentally erodes any attempts at real nuance and makes meaningful communication really difficult. The whole arena is designed in a way that causes it be a breeding ground for toxic, confrontational interaction.

It's a shithole, and just serves as a tool to multiply anger.

But it wasn't designed to be a platform for long meaningful complex conversations. It was designed for popular people , so they can inform and reach most people quickly about situations and about themselves. Also there is this thing existing "tweetlonger" and also you could basically just share some links in your tweets that can direct people to sources that are longer. Also i think that trying to have really deep and meaningful convos via writing is seriously limited and difficult.

Also it could be argued, that by limiting the tweets its forceing people to be more exact , to ramble a lot less, and to have messages that are high in signal and a lot less in noise (At least it would be if people would be well developed). So i don't necessarily think that limiting tweets is that big of a problem, but the people that are on there are just toxic.

If tweets were not limited toxic people, maybe they could express their toxicity even more and in a longer format.

I think Leo is right about the moderation. Twitter can become a good quality platform if the necessary regulations are implemented. Of course no one knows exactly how those regualtions should look like in practice, but we will see. We can only figure this out by experience and fail and try.

People who call for the eradication of Twitter are being silly. A Twitter-like platform will always exist because it serves an important function despite any toxic elements on it. If Twitter dies, some clone will just replace it. So that is not a solution. You can't put this toothpaste back in the tube.

Well, I don't think it would hurt anyone Twitter if they banned all right-wingers from their platforms. The right wingers must be stopped at all costs.

No, that is not acceptable. Right-wing POVs must be allowed. They just can't be allowed to get toxic. We cannot have a healthy public square with only left-wing views. The left-wing is wrong on some things and there is value to conservative perspectives like those of Jordan Peterson.

There are only a very few right-wing talking points that exist these days just like there are very few moderate republicans that exist today. Almost all of the reasonable right-wingers like John McCain, Collins, and Romney are gone. I am actually getting worried about that even Romney and Collins have been constantly pressured by the GOP to shift more and more to the right like the rest of party, if not one day get replaced by other MAGA freaks one of these days.

Until the Conservatives and Republicans move much more back to the center their devilish rhetoric will continue to become a profound liability to the entire fabric of our society.

@Hardkill Man, you're not thinking straight. It is not illegal nor wrong to be MAGA or to support Trump, as long as it's done in a healthy way. Most people who support Trump are not foaming-at-the-mouth rioters or racists. Let people have their political opinions as long as they aren't being violent, hateful, racist, sexist, homophobic, or spreading outright lies.

he isn't one of the full blown "freedumb!!!" types right?

Well, this is the big question as it relates specifically to Twitter.

I know he isn't a libertarian. He understands the value of government regulation in the physical domain. But I'm not sure how well he understands the need for regulation in the digital community domain. He seems to believe it's okay to let anyone tweet whatever they want as long as it's not illegal or a spambot. This would be very close to a "freedumb" position in my book. Way more moderation than that is required.

Of course it's not illegal to be MAGA just like it's not illegal to join a hate-group (unless I am wrong about that). I also don't believe that most of them are overt racists or rioters. However, I think that most MAGA and conservatives are covert with their racism, violence, hatred, racism, sexism, homophobia, hypocrisy and intellectual dishonesty. Like you said, about 50% of Americans are stuck in the right-wing echo chambers and are getting increasingly desperate and shameless with their tactics because of how scared they over how much more socially liberal this country has gotten, their anger over not being able to repeal Obama's additional government programs that have been made permanent and irreversible, and their paranoia of socialism/communism.

Yes, but you can't ban 50% of the country from a public square. That will not work. The reason banning Nazis works is because it's a tiny 1% of people.

I thought that he was definitely a libertarian. He has never liked any social spending programs that come from the government and has always spoke about how there is "too much government regulation" and that the government really needs to get out of the way as much as possible. That's why I thought he moved out of California to Texas.

But twitter is not a public square.

If nothing about this problem gets done then all of these social media platforms will have so much blood on their hands and there will be a day of reckoning.

Politics, Philosophy— Consciousness.

This has always been a discussion about what the facts are.
The facts have to be shown to others through discussion.
That can't happen if one or even a few, decide they speak for the rest.

I carefully watched interviews of Musk. He's not a libertarian but leans that direction. He acknowledges that regulation is necessary. He even wants a new gov agency to regulate AI. But he is very sympathetic to reducing the role of government.

Never really like Twitter. Slow to make changes and non-intuitive. When I click on comments, I expect to read more comments. Instead it is forcing me to post a comment. Also slow to make videos shorts.

They lost a huge pile of users to Tiktok, Instagram, Douyin, Youtube etc.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/272014/global-social-networks-ranked-by-number-of-users/

Misleading because what matters is not monthly users but influence potential.
