Is This Smell Dangerous?

3 posts in this topic

I bought a used laptop from the Internet and today I received it. The keyboard of the laptop smells like paint.. I assume the owner painted it. There is no leakage of paint or anything unusual. Just the smell.

Now I worry about potentially harming myself by smelling this paint. Should I be Worried about this? Mostly it smells when I am  close to the laptop. But nevertheless I assume the molecules are floating in my room now.

Any advice? Should I be Worried about this? I have no clue.

If they painted the keyboard it should be pretty obvious. I don't know if you can even get the kind of paint that would normally be used on a laptop, so it'll have a very different look and feel if they've touched up the paint at all. Nobody except a professional painter is going to perfectly paint tiny keycaps, especially the letters on the keys. You could pop a couple keycaps off and look underneath them to see if there is any signs of paint.

Maybe they had it kept in a room while they were painting and then immediately boxed it up or something?

I would just put it in a room that you aren't in very much, and the smell should dissipate in a couple of days.

I bought an arcade fightstick off someone before described as "like new" and it smelled like cigarette smoke from being in their house. Within a week or so it totally went away.

Some people just have weird smelling houses, so much so that it transfers to items lol. Most stuff I've bought off eBay has a kinda weird smell to it.

Yes you are probably right man. Now I checked again and the whole laptop smells like paint, not just the keyboard. I think it has not been painted.

Thanks for the information. I just became worried of some potential toxicity. Few minutes ago, I was using this laptop and then after a while I kinda felt a weird sensation in my heart. Nothing significant but I don't know if its related to the smell....

Here are some pictures. IMG_20220406_190618.jpg
