How to deal with pet theories?

I was quite surprised that google give me literally zero content on "How to deal with pet theories" search.
I thought it is quite popular topic because all of us have pet theories and of them are wrong. I mean they are right, but only in a certain context.

So there is a time when you inevitable start to notice the flaws, but still insist on using it because it's a pet theory and I just like it to much.

So far I think it's just trying to look objectively when they don't fit and trying something else.

ps this is half-baked post, but otherwise I am not going to post at all
