How do I read to actually get something out of books?

Learn about the book from various sources.

I.e. watch some introductory videos on YouTube about the book or content of the book.

For example, if I was reading a Ralston book I would watch a load of ralston interviews before it.

Also, I like audiobooks more.

I found that reading every single day is very important because you'll always be finding new opportunities to apply that knowledge and that way the knowledge would be a lot more integrated.
