How to get rid of irritated skin around the neck area?

6 posts in this topic

I seem to have quite a bit of irritated skin around my neck area (I think it does do to clean shaving once a day) & wondering what the best way to get rid of it is. It basically is a lot of little red dots and looks like irritated/dry skin. I tried putting like some moisteriser on it recently & that seemed to irritate it even more. Not really sure the best way to describe it.

I mentioned it to the docter & he just said to put shaving balm on after you shave but I doubt that will fix the issue, as I don’t even shave there will give it a try though. It seems to of been there for a while.

If you're using a standard Mach 3 type disposable razor and weird goop shave gel with sensitive skin, you're going to have these issues.

All razors will start to get dull after a couple uses. Most guys use them for months before changing them out though.

I would recommend a good safety razor. I have tried several and my go-to is the Parker 99R.

In the long run, traditional shaving will save you lots of money. The blades are like $10 for a 100 pack. Different blades vary in sharpness and other factors that will affect how you like them, so I'd buy a sample pack of at least 5 different brands to find your fav. I change my blade out every 3-5 shaves.

Get a proper shave soap and brush as well.

Then watch videos on how to shave. Your dad probably didnt teach you properly because he didnt know either if he was just using disposable razors too.

Wash your face with hot water to open your pores before shaving. Learn to shave with the grain instead of against which can irritate it. Itll take practice and observation especially on your neck as the grain  can go in many different directions.

Even down to how you dry your face off afterward. Just pat gently with a brand new cloth/towel, not one you've been using after showering for days. And dont rub totally dry.

After you can apply alum to close your pores. Itll sting where you pressed too hard or went across the grain, so it's a good learning tool. Avoid most mainstream aftershave and balms, more ingredients (chemicals) that will irritate your skin.

Do a bunch of research first. Wicked_edge subreddit is a good source of info albeit a bit cult-ish about wet shaving and showing off all the stuff they own. Then find a quality online shave shop in your state or country. Keep it simple

If it's not shaving, shave gel, cologne, soap, or something else you're applying to the area, then  maybe your shirts are rubbing and irritating the area?

My guess though is shaving on unprepared skin, against the grain, with a dull razor, while applying too much pressure.

I had the same problem. I stopped shaving every day. Started shaving once every other day and now its every 3-4 days.
Skin gets irritated if you shave every day. Also, get a good natural face-cream, keep your face moisturized.

- Get a good razor that is anti irritation, I use Gillette Skinguard Sensitive. These mach 3, 4 and what is next 5 blades, absolutely destroy your skin. Also change blade every 5-7th use. Most of these blades get dull, unless you get proper expensive equipment.

- Get a good and natural-ish shaving cream. I use Shaving Foam for anti-irritation.

- Shave down (with the grain) first, and then up (against the grain) after. Dont stroke the same place multiple times.
Let the blade do the work, no need to give so much force when shaving.

- Use a good Face-Washing Cream, (wash your face before shaving)

- Don't dry your face with a "normal" towel, too much bacteria on it. Use wide Kitchen Paper Towels to dry your face after a shave.

- Did I mention, don't shave everyday? ;)
You will look just as good with some scruff. Trust me, girls like guys who take care of their skin. Rather than having to kiss a red/sore face that is all warm and irritated.

Hope I was of use.

you could just get an electric hair trimmer and keep a little bit of hair on your face when you shave rather than shaving clean (unless that is a personal preference ofcourse). Some of these allow you to go as low as 0.2mm.

I used to do clean-shave for years and would always get super dry skin were using an electric trimmer does not do that nearly at all. And you also save on aftershave, shaving foam and all the other creams that one would need to use for a clean shave. Just slap some coconut oil on that face after :D Not to mention the cost of Gillette razors over a year which could be significant.

You could be looking at less dry skin and potentially saving 200-300 dollars a year
