It seems at cursory glance and taking these reports at face value that a form of resurgent nationalism is on the rise backed by Conservative, reactionary military elements with a tacit support of the Russian state via the presence of it's private contractor mercenary groups against French military presence as maintenance of an international peacekeeping force in former colonial countries as a form of guarantee for peace in the region as form of obligation as a former colonial power with former deep cultural ties to it - in a possibly a seen form as France's international extension of safeguarding and guiding said countries with a deep history of it's imposed influence now towards its liberal democratic ideals in a seen new era break from the past of imperial hegemonic dominator politics - denounced in this nationalist backlash as a form of guise or mask for retainment of it's neocolonialist benefits, privelleges, status and influences in the region in the guise if said liberal and international and regional peace and cooperation rhetoric.

Well that's at least my two cents and interpretation of what this nationalist backlash seems to be about and like.
