How to afford professional help

9 posts in this topic

I've really wanted to go see a psychiatrist or a counselor and go to rehab. But how do I do that when I am still working towards financial freedom? I do doordash and I am pretty sure they offer health insurance. Are there any good resources for helping addiction and getting help?

Even here in Canada, a relatively progressive country (not to mention I live in BC which is probably the most progressive province in Canada), we still have to pay for mental health treatments.

I think we can get tax deductions if we see a registered psychologist (as opposed to clinical counsellors or other therapists), but I don't know how much deductions that is.

I think for most people, getting into a good company that provides healthcare support is probably the best way to go.

Yeah, most aren't lucky enough to have it for free, but In my area, if your low income there are places to go that will charge on a sliding scale,  if you don't have insurance. If your earnings are low enough your service could be only a few dollars. With my insurance, if I were to use my insurance for that service I would have to pay a $30 copay for every visit. I think it's too much!

Depending on where you live, you can do some research about low cost counselling. There're usually some groups/non-profit doing that. I would first ask social services or even call a distress line number, they may have information about that. I used to work on the line and was actually surprised to find what is out there.. but do understand that it may be very limited options so you can't necessarily get the 'best care' because the therapist you're matched with isn't super compatible or such.
