Whats The Differences Between Principles and Values?

7 posts in this topic

My top 5 personal principles I figured out are...

1.Integrity and Honesty

2.Decency, Respect and Kindness

3.Thoughtfulness

4.Accountability

5.Humility

But my values on the other hand are probably around 50-100...

So what makes values and principles different from eachother?

Principles seem to be more "holy" than values and seem to be more like guidelines for a good and virtuos life... They often seem more pure and beautiful can almost put a tear to my eye when I contemplate them... why is that?

What do you think? What are your highest principles?

I literally don't see a difference.

Trying to  think of it -off the top of my head- values could be something more broad like moral values. Principles could be something filed under a particular set of values. For example - your principle is to never lie and this could be related to your value of honesty. You could fit in more principles under this specific value.

I see principles as being more like guidelines for behavior.  Guidelines that one adopts since they think it will give them a certain result.  Like codes of behavior, thinking, feeling, or interacting.

Values i see as being more broad.  So, you can value certain principles, like being honest in conversation.  Yet, you can also value your dog, a certain book, or making $3000 a month.  You can even value certain feelings.

So, in short, values for me cover a more broad category of things one, well, values and likes and sees as desireable.  Whereas I see principles as guidelines for behavior to achieve certain outcomes (or values).

In a certain way...

Principles = How

Values = What

That makes alot of sense!

@Rilles principles are like rules you set for yourself, it’s a codex you live by, they mark your moral boundaries you want to obey to. can be fierce stuff.

especially if it’s close to a code of conduct and you encounter people with principles of perceived less integrity than yours.

values give space, they set the mood for how you enact and behave in a social surrounding and what is important in setting goals. values are moral mood shapers/modulators. they are also playing a roll in how you choose principles. principles and values are part of a value system.

Principles are values that need conscious enforcement. They stem from your authentic values and are based on them. But since principles are not technically the values themselves but rather a way by which the values manifest themselves out there in the world, or a medium that the values get expressed through, they are more prone to corruption, distraction, gaslighting, delusion, forgetfulness, etc. even by oneself. Hence why many people can't follow through their chosen principles.

Finally someone put the nail on the head! Something like this had been floating around in my mind but I couldnt put it in the words! Yes principles are steadfast which goes against the sort of looseness of being a relativist but at the same time they are important because without them you can easily veer off a good path because you delude yourself. Imagine an 1 year sober alcoholic saying "Oh having one beer its not technically bad because thats just a judgement I make in my mind!" and then he goes and fucks up his life again. Its a tricky balance. That alcoholic could easily be better off following some close-minded hardcore principle.
